21-year-old Arya became the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM| Communist Party of India-Marxist Communist Party of India (CPI-M) Arya Rajendran from Mudwanmugal in Thiruvananthapuram was sworn in as the new Mayor of the Municipal Corporation. She is 21 years old. Arya is a second-year BSc (Mathematics) student at All Saints College here. She told the media that she will continue her studies along with assuming the responsibility of the City Mayor.

Communist Party of India (CPI) P.K. Raju is the Deputy Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation.

On the other hand, Prasanna Ernest of CPI-M in Kollam was sworn in as Mayor. This is his second term as the Mayor of Kollam. After swearing-in, he told the media that his ambition is to make Kollam the best municipal corporation in the state.

CPI’s M. Anilkumar was sworn in as Mayor of Ernakulam Corporation. This corporation is considered to be the richest corporation in the state. The Left Front has ousted the United Democratic Front (UDF) and captured the corporation. Solving local problems will be a major challenge for the new mayor.

In Thrissur, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the CPI-M rebelled Congress leader V.K. Varghese is elected mayor. Varghese, a military officer, has entered active politics after his retirement. When the Congress party did not give him a ticket, he contested as an independent and won. Varghese will be the mayor for a two-year term and then the CPI-M leader will hold the post for the remaining three years.

In Kozhikode, a retired teacher and CPI (M) leader Bina Philip was sworn in as mayor. She told media persons that she wanted to develop Kozhikode as a world-class city and that she would work unitedly on the lines of the party to achieve this goal.

Only the Congress leader has got the post of Mayor in Kannur Municipal Corporation. Party leader T.O. Monahan was sworn in as mayor. He said that he would try to make Kannur the handloom capital of the country. Kannur has a large number of weavers and handloom textiles are largely exported from this region.
