Assam Coordinator moves Supreme Court for re-verification of NRC

Guwahati | The Assam Coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has urged the Supreme Court for ‘comprehensive and time-bound re-verification of the list of citizens’, highlighting ‘major irregularities’ in the process. Officials gave this information on Thursday. Officials said Assam NRC Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma also prayed for the removal of illegal voters from the voter list of Assam in his interactive application, as well as an amendment to the draft NRC and a supplementary list under a relevant section of the schedule of citizenship And the issuance of National Identity Cards (Rules, 2003).

An official said on the condition of anonymity that Dev Sarma filed the application on 8 May after meeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. After assuming office on Monday, the Chief Minister said that the state government would examine 20 percent of the NRC list in the border areas and 10 percent inside Assam.

The case was accepted by the apex court on 11 May.

Dev Sarma said in his application to the Supreme Court: pass appropriate instructions that the relevant districts are re-verified under the supervision of a monitoring committee and such committee may be preferably represented by the concerned District Judge, District Magistrate, and Superintendent.

Pass such other or further instructions as stated in the application, as your lordship may find appropriate and appropriate in the facts and circumstances of the case.

A statutory notification was issued in December 2013 to initiate a monitoring exercise by the apex court to update the 1951 NRC in Assam.

The draft list was published in August 2019, covering 19.06 lakh out of 3.3 crore applications for lack of sufficient documents to establish their Indian citizenship.
