Guwahati | Swimming coach Mrinal Basumatary, who was accused of sexual harassment by several young women athletes at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) training center at Solalgaon in Assam’s North Lakhimpur town, has now been booked on suspicion of sexual harassment. In response to the complaint, an FIR has been registered against Basumatary at a police station in Guwahati.
“The complaint was first lodged by a woman weightlifting coach on May 18, following which several women athletes complained,” SAI officials said in a statement on Friday.
“She alleged that Mrinal Basumatary, in-charge of STC Solalgaon, sexually harassed women athletes. On receipt of her oral complaint, prompt action has been taken by the Regional Center of Sports Authority of India, Guwahati,” the statement said.
“Considering the seriousness of the matter, an FIR has been registered. Also, the matter has been referred to the internal committee of the regional center of the nodal sports body and an inquiry has been initiated. The committee will conduct its inquiry at the earliest.” Will submit the report.”
It added, “SAI follows a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment cases and the same will be followed, to ensure that justice is served to our athletes.”
The police have not yet taken any action against Basumatary. After the alleged incident, the case has been handed over to the Lakhimpur police station.
No statement has come from the police in this matter yet.
