Britain’s Queen Elizabeth-II dies after 70 years of rule

Queen Elizabeth II

London| Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, has died in Balmoral at the age of 96 after ruling for 70 years. His family gathered at their Scottish palace earlier on Thursday after concerns about his health grew.

The Queen first took the throne in 1952 and has since seen enormous social change.

Her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the nation in mourning as the new king and head of state of 14 Commonwealth territories, the BBC reports.

“The Queen passed away this afternoon at Balmoral,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

“The King and the Queen Consort will be at Balmoral this evening and return to London tomorrow.”

The team of doctors was medically supervising the Queen. All the children of the Queen have reached Balmoral.

Her grandson, Prince William, her brother Prince Harry are on the way.

Queen Elizabeth II’s tenure spanned post-war austerity, the transition from Empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War, and Britain’s accession and withdrawal from the European Union.

According to the BBC report, there were 15 prime ministers during his reign. The first prime minister was Winston Churchill, born in 1874 and now Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975 and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.

He continued to have weekly interactions with his prime minister throughout his reign.

Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on 21 April 1926 in Mayfair, London.
