New Delhi, January 16  Former champion PV Sindhu has regained her old aggressive image while emerging Indian player Kiran George won in straight games despite pressure. Apart from this, the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made a comeback after trailing by one game and made it to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2025 at KD Jadhav Indoor Hall on Thursday.

Playing her second tournament since the Paris Olympics, Sindhu defeated Japan’s Manami Suiju 21-15, 21-13 in straight games, while Kiran defeated France’s Alex Lanier 22-20, 21-13 in the second round of men’s singles.

Later, 2022 champions Satwik and Chirag had to regroup after losing the first game and it was this solidarity that helped the duo beat Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi/Hiroki Okamura 20-22, 21-14, 21-16.

Among other top players, last edition’s runners-up Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong had to save a match point in the decider against Toma Junior Popov. However, he converted the one hour and 16 minute struggle into a 14-21, 21-18, 22-20 win to enter the quarterfinals.

While that match between Lee Cheuk Yiu and Toma Junior Popov kept badminton fans on the edge of their seats, Sindhu and Kiran gave them enough reasons to celebrate.

After being on the side-lines for over six months, Sindhu looked rusty in her opening match against Chinese Taipei’s Shuo Yun Sung in the opening round. But the former world champion played an aggressive game against Suiju today, hitting winners from both sides of the court.

After some openers, Sindhu took a 13-6 lead in the opening game. Though Suiju reduced the gap to 14-13, the Indian star always looked in control and she again made a big difference. Sindhu dominated the second game, hitting cross court winners at will.

After the match, Sindhu said, “After the break, what I felt best about my game today was my movement and my attacks were working well. Going forward, I have to be ready for anything, as the matches will get tougher. Now in the next round, Sindhu will face fourth seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia, who defeated another Japanese player Natsuki Nadera 21-12, 24-22 in another second round match.

Earlier, Kiran saved six game points against Lanier in the opening game of the second round match. 24-year-old Kiran, who entered the competition at the last moment from the reserve list, was unable to find rhythm due to the accurate attack of the French player in the opening game.

Lanier took a 20-14 lead in the first game, but Kiran made a brilliant comeback and won eight consecutive points to win the game 22-20. At that time, he kept the shuttle in play for so long that his opponent got a chance to make a mistake. And as the Indian player started getting closer, the French player started making mistakes.

After the win, Kiran said, “At 14-20, I was playing one point at a time. Not thinking about the lead or whether I was trailing or not. I was playing for one point at a time. I think that helped me win the game.”

He will now face China’s Hong Yang Weng, who defeated Malaysia’s Jun Hao Leong 21-18, 21-12 in the second round.

It looked like Satwik and Chirag would also reach the 8th round in straight games. At one point they took a lead of 18-14 and got a game point at 20-19, but could not capitalize on it and lost the first game. But the setback did not prove to be costly as they quickly gained control of the game in the second game and then maintained the lead to win in one hour and 11 minutes.

It was not a good day for the other Indian contenders, with the women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa/Tanisha Crasto, Rutuparna Panda/Shwetaparna Panda and the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha and Asith Surya/Amrita Pramuthesh bowing out in the second round.

Dhruv and Tanisha put up a strong performance against eighth seeds Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito of Japan but lost with a score-line of 21-18, 21-17. Later, Tanisha and Ashwini also had a mixed day as they lost to Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto of Japan 9-21, 21-23.

Hyderabad, Dec 28: Hyderabad FC broke their five-match losing streak in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 when the hosts held East Bengal FC to a 1-1 draw at their home ground, GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Saturday.

Midfielder Jeekson Singh scored for East Bengal in the 64th minute while Hyderabad left-back Manoj Mohammed scored the equaliser in the 90th minute. Bissau-Guinean striker Edmilson Correa was adjudged the Player of the Match for providing an assist in the equaliser.

Spanish head coach Oscar Bruzon will surely be disappointed after the Red and Gold brigade conceded a lead and settled for a draw today. East Bengal FC remain 11th in the table with 14 points from 13 matches, including four wins, two draws and seven losses. At the same time, Hyderabad FC’s interim head coach Shamil Chembakath must be feeling relieved after his team’s continuous losing streak ended. Hyderabad FC is placed 12th in the table with eight points from 13 matches, two wins, two draws and nine losses.

The first goal of the match came in the 64th minute, when midfielder Jeakson Singh gave East Bengal FC an early lead, making the score 1-0. Team captain and Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva took a powerful shot on a free-kick outside the box, on which the ball hit the cross bar and on the rebound, Jeakson, who was in the dangerous area of six yards, put the ball into the goal net with a header, while goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh and right-back Abdul Rabih’s defensive efforts went in vain.

In the 90th minute, left-back Manoj Mohammad scored a goal and gave Hyderabad FC a 1-1 draw. Bissau-Guinean striker Edmilson Correa put in a through-pass from outside the box, where Manoj, running from behind, entered the box and shot the ball with his left foot into the bottom right corner while goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill had no chance to save it.

This first half, which had the least number of shots (four) this season, was very dull, which ended in a goalless draw, as both the teams were seen playing very defensively and did not show the hunger to break the deadlock and take the lead. Therefore, the score at the half-time break was 0-0. Hyderabad FC had more control of the ball at 58 percent. But the host team was able to make only three attempts, which were directionless. Therefore, the goal did not come.

At the same time, the only attempt made by East Bengal FC, which had 42 percent possession of the ball, was also not on target and the goal did not come. Hence, both the goalkeepers Arshdeep Singh (Hyderabad FC) and Prabhsukhan Gill (East Bengal FC) could not be tested due to the extremely defensive play of both the teams.

This was the ninth match between these two teams in the ISL and the third draw. Hyderabad FC have won four matches while East Bengal FC have won twice.

Sharjah, Oct 13  Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma took two wickets each to restrict Australia to 151 for eight in a do-or-die Women’s T20 World Cup match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

India suffered a setback even before the game began. Asha Shobna injured her knee during the warm-up after the toss. The Australia captain agreed to a late change at the request of the match referee and Radha Yadav was included in the playing 11.

The second change in India’s team was Pooja Vastrakar, who replaced S. Sanjana. Australia did not have their regular captains Alyssa Healy and Tayla Vlaeminck in the team, who were replaced by Grace Harris and Darcie Brown.

Winning the toss and batting first, Australia could not make much use of the powerplay. Renuka Singh, Shreyanka Patil and Pooja Vastrakar bowled tight line lengths. The pitch was slow and the ball was staying low due to which the Australian batsmen could not open their hands.

Grace Harris started by hitting a four towards point off Renuka’s ball on the second ball of the innings. Harmanpreet gave the second over to Shreyanka who bowled four dot balls to Beth Mooney and conceded just two runs in the over.

In the next over, Mooney, who looked under pressure, tried to open her hands but was caught by Radha at backward point. Renuka got Georgia Wareham LBW on the next ball to get her second wicket on consecutive balls. Stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath then took the innings forward with Grace.

Puja bowled the fourth over of the innings and conceded six runs. Australia’s score after six overs was 37/2.

Arundhati Reddy came on the attack in the seventh over and kept the pressure on the Australian batsmen. In the next over, Tahlia and Grace hit fours off Pooja and added a total of 10 runs.

Deepti Sharma started with a brilliant over and restricted Australia to 65/2 in 10 overs. Meanwhile, Tahlia became the fastest Australian woman player to complete 1000 T20 runs. She completed this feat in 37 innings, one less than Meg Lanning.

India restricted Australia to just 151 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma took two wickets each.

Hyderabad, October 12 . Batting first in the third and final T20 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here, after setting a huge target of 298 runs, India, with the help of leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi’s 3-30, on Saturday restricted Bangladesh to 164/7 and registered a thumping 133-run win. With this, India completed a 3-0 clean sweep in the series.

On the back of Sanju Samson’s brilliant first T20 International century (111 runs in 47 balls) and captain Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant 75-run innings, India scored a record-breaking 297/6 in the stipulated 20 overs, which is the team’s highest score so far in T20 International matches. After this, Bishnoi and other bowlers restricted Bangladesh to 164/7 and gave the team a one-sided victory.

The 133-run victory margin achieved in front of the home crowd on Dussehra is also India’s third-largest victory in terms of runs in men’s T20 matches.

In Bangladesh’s innings, Mayank Yadav gave India a good start by taking the wicket of Parvez Hussain on the very first ball. While trying to pull, the ball hit his glove and went to first slip.

Washington Sundar gave Bangladesh the second blow by getting Tanjid Hasan caught at third man. After this, Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hussain Shanto tried to reverse-sweep Ravi Bishnoi’s ball, but the ball took the top edge of the bat and went straight into the wicketkeeper’s gloves.

Liton Das and Tauheed Hridoy shared a 53-run partnership. However, Das was caught out at deep midwicket off Bishnoi’s ball after scoring 42 runs in 25 balls. The leg-spinner became the joint-third Indian bowler to take the fastest 50 wickets in men’s T20 Internationals.

Mahmudullah’s final T20 innings ended on eight runs. He was holed out at long-on off Mayank.

Mahedi Hasan went for the big hit but was holed out in the deep off Nitish Kumar Reddy, with Bishnoi getting his third victim of the match by having Rishad Hussain caught at long-off.

Amidst all this, Hridoy completed his half-century by hitting Bishnoi for a six and remained unbeaten on 63.

Brief scores:

India 297/6 in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 111, Suryakumar Yadav 75; Tanzim Hasan Sakib 3-66) beat Bangladesh 164/7 in 20 overs (Tauheed Hridoy 63 not out, Liton Das 42; Ravi Bishnoi 3-30, Mayank Yadav 2-32) by 133 runs.

Dubai, 6 October. With the brilliant performance of the bowlers led by medium pacer Arundhati Reddy (three wickets for 19 runs) and useful innings of Shefali Verma (32) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (29 retired hurt), India registered its first win by beating arch-rival Pakistan by six wickets in its second match of Group A of the Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday.

India kept its semi-final hopes alive by scoring 108 runs for four wickets in 18.5 overs after restricting Pakistan to a paltry 105 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs.

India has got its first win in this tournament, but could the Indian team have chased the target with more speed, because the Indian team’s net run rate is negative and its next two matches are against Sri Lanka and Australia. If India had achieved this target by 11.2 overs, then India’s net run rate could have been positive.

Arundhati Reddy, who took three wickets in Pakistan’s innings, received the Player of the Match award. While chasing the target, India once again lost opener Smriti Mandhana cheaply. Mandhana was dismissed for seven runs and the team’s score was 18.

Shefali then put India on the path to victory with a crucial 43-run partnership for the second wicket with Jemimah Rodrigues. Shefali was dismissed for 32 runs with the help of three fours in 35 balls. In the 16th over of the innings, Fatima Sana brought excitement to the match by giving two blows in two balls to India. Fatima dismissed Jemimah and Richa Ghosh and reduced India’s score to 80 runs for four wickets. Jemimah scored 23 runs in 28 balls.

After two wickets fell in quick succession, captain Harmanpreet took charge and retired hurt after scoring 29 runs in 24 balls. Harman went outside the leg stump to play Nida Dar’s ball, played on the inside out, got a fuller ball outside the off stump and finally went to open the face of the bat and lost balance, Harman fell on the crease and now the physio has come on the field, Harman had fallen forward, but brought the back leg to the crease, it seems that she has a strain in her neck. Sajeevan Sajna gave India the victory by hitting a four as soon as she came.

Earlier there was a time when it seemed that the Pakistan team would not be able to play the full 20 overs but in the last overs Pakistan took the pace forward. Two catches were also missed from Shobhana Asha but overall India stopped Pakistan on a low score.

This match, which was played on a new pitch, was the 100th T20 match to be played in Dubai.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first. But after losing Gul Ferozza in the first over, Pakistan’s innings never got back on track and they lost wickets at regular intervals. Muniba Ali (17), Nida Dar (28), captain Fatima Sana (13) and Syeda Arub Shah (14) were the only batsmen to reach double figures.

For India, Arundhati Reddy took three wickets for 19 runs in four overs while Shreyanka Patil took two wickets for just 12 runs. Renuka Singh, Deepti Sharma and Shobhana Asha took one wicket each.

SC Freiburg faced off against FC St. Pauli at the Europa-Park Stadion for only the third time in history, but this match marked the first encounter between the two sides in the Bundesliga. Previously, Freiburg had won both their meetings at the stadium—one in the arena’s opening game in 2021 and another in a DFB-Pokal match during the 2022/23 season. However, this time, St. Pauli emerged victorious, handing Freiburg a 3-0 defeat.

The match started with Freiburg controlling possession, while St. Pauli, freshly promoted and with only one point from their first four games, sat deep to close off space. Both teams had a quiet start, with neither goalkeeper being tested early on. But in the 18th minute, St. Pauli capitalized on their first real chance. Elias Saad pounced on a loose ball in Freiburg’s penalty area, putting the visitors ahead against the run of play. This unexpected opener marked the third consecutive home game in which Freiburg had fallen behind.

[presto_player id=18417]

Freiburg responded quickly, as they had done in their previous matches. In the 16th minute, a Vincenzo Grifo free kick forced a good save from St. Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, sparking the game into life. Moments later, Philipp Treu’s shot for St. Pauli was blocked by Philipp Lienhart, while Freiburg’s own attacks down the left side failed to find a final touch to convert their crosses.

St. Pauli nearly doubled their lead when Eric Smith struck the bar from a free kick in the 35th minute. Freiburg had a golden opportunity to level the score just minutes later. A foul on Matthias Ginter in the box led to a penalty after the referee consulted VAR. However, Grifo’s penalty was saved by Vasilj, leaving Freiburg frustrated.

Moments after the missed penalty, St. Pauli punished Freiburg further. Just before halftime, Oladapo Afolayan capitalized on another defensive error by Freiburg, firing a low shot into the net to make it 2-0 for St. Pauli.
