Nagpur, Feb 4 Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was on Tuesday named in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England.

Chakravarthy’s potential selection is backed by his remarkable ‘Player of the Series’ performance in the recently concluded five-match T20I series against England, where he finished as India’s highest wicket-taker, taking 14 wickets, including a sensational five-wicket haul.

“The men’s selection committee has named Varun Chakravarthy in India’s squad for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against England,” the BCCI said in a statement.

With the ODI series set to begin on Thursday in Nagpur, Chakravarthy has begun training with the team.

The 33-year-old’s ability to trouble England’s batting lineup with his variations and deceptive spin played a key role in India’s 4-1 series win. Despite playing only 23 List A (50-over) matches, Chakravarthy has an impressive record of taking 59 wickets at a strike rate of 19.8. His recent exploits in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he finished as the leading wickettaker among spinners, further strengthened his claim. He took 18 wickets at an astonishing average of 12.16, including a best performance of 5-9.

Chakravarthy’s inclusion adds more depth to India’s spin department, which already comprises the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. With the Champions Trophy approaching, the selectors are testing different combinations to finalize their squad for the ICC event scheduled to be held in Dubai later this month.

India’s updated ODI squad for England series:

Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy.

Mumbai, February 2 Opener Abhishek Sharma played a brilliant innings in the last match of the T20 series against England at the Wankhede Stadium. He scored a century in just 37 balls, which is the second fastest T20 century by an Indian. Thanks to his aggressive batting, India scored 247 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.

Abhishek scored 135 runs in his 54-ball innings, which included 7 fours and 13 sixes. He also scored a half-century in just 17 balls, which is the second fastest half-century for India in T20 International. His batting pushed all the England bowlers on the backfoot.

At the beginning of the match, Sanju Samson started strongly for India, but he was dismissed early. He scored 16 runs in seven balls, which included a four and two sixes. He was dismissed by Jofra Archer.

Abhishek also hit Mark Wood and Jamie Overton fiercely. He hit two fours and a six off Wood in the fourth over, while hit consecutive sixes off the first two balls of Overton. He then completed his half-century in 17 balls.

Abhishek and Tilak Verma shared a 115-run partnership for the second wicket, with Abhishek scoring 80 and Verma 23. Verma was dismissed early, but left India in a strong position.

The pitch was expected to help the bowlers early, but the Indian batsmen scored runs without much trouble. Abhishek completed his century in 37 balls, including 5 fours and 10 sixes.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed after scoring few runs, but Shivam Dubey supported Abhishek well. Dubey scored 30 runs in 13 balls with the help of fours and sixes. Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh could not score many runs, but Axar Patel hit two fours in the end to take India to 247.

Brydon Carse was the most successful bowler for England, taking 3 wickets, while Mark Wood managed to take 2 wickets.

Kuala Lumpur, 19 Women’s T20 World Cup title again. India defeated South Africa by nine wickets in the final played at Bayumas Oval on Sunday.

India’s spin bowlers performed brilliantly and took a total of nine wickets, out of which three were taken by Trisha. Due to good fielding, the Indian team bundled out South Africa for just 82 runs. This score was not big on a slow pitch.

Trisha scored an unbeaten 44 off 33 balls for the Indian team chasing the target, while Sanika Chalke remained unbeaten after scoring 26 off 22 balls. India achieved the target in 11.2 overs and won the title for the second consecutive time. Earlier, India won this trophy in South Africa in 2023.

This victory once again proved that India’s dominance in Under-19 women’s cricket remains. The special thing was that India did not lose a single match in the tournament and became the first team to win the title by winning all the matches.

Chasing the target of 83 runs, Trisha started by hitting a four past the wicketkeeper. Then she sent Faye Cowling’s balls across the boundary line twice in the cover area. After this, G. Kamalini hit a four over mid-on off Kayla Reneke’s ball.

Trisha played brilliant shots on Seshani Naidu’s leg-spin balls and India’s score was 36 runs without any loss in four overs.

Kamalini was out after scoring eight runs in the fifth over when she tried to send Kayla’s ball across the boundary, but was caught at long-on. After this, Sanika hit a brilliant four between cover and mid-off, while Trisha took four more runs by playing a beautiful shot between deep midwicket and long-on.

Sanika brought the team closer to victory by hitting a four over Ashley van Wyk. Then both the batsmen rotated the strike well. Sanika sent Gemma Botha’s ball across the boundary, then Trisha hit a four past the wicketkeeper off Gemma’s ball. Finally, Sanika hit a four towards square leg off Monalisa’s ball to give India the win.

Brief Score: South Africa all out for 82 runs (Mieke van Voorst 23, Faye Cowling 15; Trisha Gongadi 3-15, Parunika Sisodia 2-6), India won the match by scoring 84 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 11.2 overs. (Trisha Gongadi 44 not out, Sanika Chalke 26 not out) Kayla Reneke 1-14).

Chennai, 26 January . Tilak Verma’s brilliant unbeaten 72 helped India register a thrilling two-wicket win against England in the second T20 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The hosts have taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

After restricting England to 165/9, India started off very fast, but the team soon found itself in trouble due to the lack of a big partnership. At one point, its score was 78/5.

Tilak Verma changed gears and handled the pressure well. He scored his first half-century in T20 on home ground.

He scored most of his runs in the square using the pace of England’s bowlers. He played patiently and built partnerships with the tailenders, although he also kept hitting in between.

Tilak kept his patience after Jofra Archer took 19 runs in the 16th over. Tilak Verma reached India’s target with four balls to spare by hitting Jamie Overton for a four on extra cover in the last over.

Verma remained unbeaten on 72 off 55 balls with the help of four fours and five sixes.

Abhishek Sharma, who came to open the innings for India, hit three fours in Jofra Archer’s first over. However, he was out LBW off Mark Wood’s ball while trying to play the cross line.

Sanju Samson got caught in the deep while trying to pull Archer. Suryakumar Yadav started well by hitting three fours. Verma also slashed Archer for a four, then flicked and hit two sixes. He welcomed Brydon Carse by pulling him to fine leg.

However, Carse dismissed Suryakumar Yadav and Dhruv Jurel. India suffered another big blow when Hardik Pandya tried to cut a delivery from Carse, but the ball went behind to keeper Phil Salt.

The show after that was all in the name of Tilak Verma. Washington Sundar supported him well and hit a four off Overton. Adil Rashid dropped his catch on the score of ten runs. He then pulled Wood over the boundary line and then hit two fours over mid-off to bring India back in the game.

Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh also could not do much after Sundar’s dismissal. The pressure mounted on Ravi Bishnoi and Verma. Bishnoi neatly hit two fours and then Tilak hit a beautiful four to ensure India’s victory.

In England’s team, who came to bat first, captain Jos Buttler top-scored with 45 runs, while Brydon Carse made a significant contribution of 31 runs in 17 balls.

For India, Axar and Varun Chakravarthy bowled brilliantly with 2-32 and 2-38 respectively.

Brief scores:

England 165/9 in 20 overs (Jos Buttler 45, Brydon Carse 31; Axar Patel 2-32, Varun Chakravarthy 2-38) beat India 166/8 in 19.2 overs (Tilak Verma 72 not out, Washington Sundar 26; Brydon Carse 3-29, Adil Rashid 1-14) by 2 wickets.

Dubai, Jan 25  Arshdeep Singh, India’s leading wicket-taker in 2024, was named the ICC Men’s T20 Cricketer of the Year at the ICC Awards on Saturday.

The left-arm pacer ended India’s wait for a major ICC trophy with victory at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean and USA in June and cemented his reputation as one of the leading powerplay and death bowlers in the game.

The 25-year-old Arshdeep has long been regarded as a top-order batsman, and India have reposed great faith in his ability since his full international debut in 2022 and 2024 was the year Arshdeep established himself as a fully-fledged world-class bowler in T20I cricket, taking a plethora of wickets with the new ball and proving to be consistently economical in the death overs on a variety of surfaces. Arshdeep was the leading Indian wicket-taker in T20s that year, taking 36 wickets in just 18 matches.

He played a huge role in India’s title triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and stepped up as the leader of the attack as selectors ushered in a new era for the T20 team after the win in the Caribbean. Only four players in the world have taken more T20 wickets than Arshdeep in a calendar year – Saudi Arabia’s Usman Najib (38), Sri Lanka’s Vanindu Hasaranga (38), UAE’s Junaid Siddiqui (40) and Hong Kong’s Ehsan Khan (46) – and all four have played more matches. Of these bowlers, only Hasaranga has played for a Full Member nation.

Arshdeep took wickets at an average of just 15.31 and finished the year with an economy rate of 7.49, despite bowling mostly in the powerplay and death overs. He was a consistent wicket-taker, taking wickets at a strike rate of 10.80.

Arshdeep had several stellar performances in the year, most notably when he thrashed the USA in New York during the group stage of the T20 World Cup, taking a majestic 4/9 in his four overs.

But Arshdeep’s most important performance of the year came on the biggest stage, as he played a key role in India successfully defending a score of 176 in the World Cup final in Barbados.

As part of the pace bowling trio alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya that effectively won the game for India, Arshdeep’s impressive figures of 2/20 in four overs tell only part of the story.

Best of all with the new ball, Arshdeep had dangerous South Africa skipper Aiden Markram caught behind in the powerplay in just the third over. And when India needed wickets in the middle overs, Arshdeep dismissed the set Quinton de Kock.

India’s collective effort in the death overs was amazing as South Africa fell seven runs short of their target and Arshdeep played a key role in that, coming back to bowl the penultimate over when South Africa needed 20 runs from 12 balls.

Arshdeep bowled a near-perfect death over under the most pressure, conceding just four runs and leaving Hardik Pandya to defend 16 runs in the final over, a job he did brilliantly.

A brilliant performance in the powerplay, a wicket in the middle overs and economical bowling in the death overs – Arshdeep delivered when it mattered most.

Earlier in the day, Arshdeep was also named in the Rohit Sharma-led ICC Men’s T20 Team of the Year and it also included Pandya and Bumrah as the other Indian players.

New Delhi, January 16  Former champion PV Sindhu has regained her old aggressive image while emerging Indian player Kiran George won in straight games despite pressure. Apart from this, the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made a comeback after trailing by one game and made it to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2025 at KD Jadhav Indoor Hall on Thursday.

Playing her second tournament since the Paris Olympics, Sindhu defeated Japan’s Manami Suiju 21-15, 21-13 in straight games, while Kiran defeated France’s Alex Lanier 22-20, 21-13 in the second round of men’s singles.

Later, 2022 champions Satwik and Chirag had to regroup after losing the first game and it was this solidarity that helped the duo beat Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi/Hiroki Okamura 20-22, 21-14, 21-16.

Among other top players, last edition’s runners-up Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong had to save a match point in the decider against Toma Junior Popov. However, he converted the one hour and 16 minute struggle into a 14-21, 21-18, 22-20 win to enter the quarterfinals.

While that match between Lee Cheuk Yiu and Toma Junior Popov kept badminton fans on the edge of their seats, Sindhu and Kiran gave them enough reasons to celebrate.

After being on the side-lines for over six months, Sindhu looked rusty in her opening match against Chinese Taipei’s Shuo Yun Sung in the opening round. But the former world champion played an aggressive game against Suiju today, hitting winners from both sides of the court.

After some openers, Sindhu took a 13-6 lead in the opening game. Though Suiju reduced the gap to 14-13, the Indian star always looked in control and she again made a big difference. Sindhu dominated the second game, hitting cross court winners at will.

After the match, Sindhu said, “After the break, what I felt best about my game today was my movement and my attacks were working well. Going forward, I have to be ready for anything, as the matches will get tougher. Now in the next round, Sindhu will face fourth seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia, who defeated another Japanese player Natsuki Nadera 21-12, 24-22 in another second round match.

Earlier, Kiran saved six game points against Lanier in the opening game of the second round match. 24-year-old Kiran, who entered the competition at the last moment from the reserve list, was unable to find rhythm due to the accurate attack of the French player in the opening game.

Lanier took a 20-14 lead in the first game, but Kiran made a brilliant comeback and won eight consecutive points to win the game 22-20. At that time, he kept the shuttle in play for so long that his opponent got a chance to make a mistake. And as the Indian player started getting closer, the French player started making mistakes.

After the win, Kiran said, “At 14-20, I was playing one point at a time. Not thinking about the lead or whether I was trailing or not. I was playing for one point at a time. I think that helped me win the game.”

He will now face China’s Hong Yang Weng, who defeated Malaysia’s Jun Hao Leong 21-18, 21-12 in the second round.

It looked like Satwik and Chirag would also reach the 8th round in straight games. At one point they took a lead of 18-14 and got a game point at 20-19, but could not capitalize on it and lost the first game. But the setback did not prove to be costly as they quickly gained control of the game in the second game and then maintained the lead to win in one hour and 11 minutes.

It was not a good day for the other Indian contenders, with the women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa/Tanisha Crasto, Rutuparna Panda/Shwetaparna Panda and the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha and Asith Surya/Amrita Pramuthesh bowing out in the second round.

Dhruv and Tanisha put up a strong performance against eighth seeds Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito of Japan but lost with a score-line of 21-18, 21-17. Later, Tanisha and Ashwini also had a mixed day as they lost to Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto of Japan 9-21, 21-23.
