Oslo, May 19  Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo. The summit focused on sustainability, innovation, clean energy, new technology, and strengthening cooperation for a peaceful and prosperous future. Following this, PM Modi addressed a joint press meet with the leaders of the Nordic countries.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said that a shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and multilateralism makes India and Norway natural partners. The two countries also exchanged views on issues related to West Asia and global tensions.

PM Modi said, “I am delighted to be attending the India-Nordic Summit today. I thank the President for convening this summit. I welcome all Nordic leaders to this summit. Our shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and multilateralism makes us natural partners. Eight years ago, we established this format to energize and accelerate our relations with the Nordic countries.”

He said, “I am very pleased that we have made significant progress in our relations over the past few years. Our bilateral trade has quadrupled in 10 years. Investment funds from Nordic countries are also becoming important partners in India’s rapid growth. Investment from Nordic countries in India has increased by almost 200 percent in the last decade. India’s growth story has contributed to rapidly growing trade and investment, and has also played a very positive role in the economies of the Nordic countries, creating thousands of new jobs. Building on this strong foundation, we have recently taken some important initiatives to take our relations to the next level.”

PM Modi said, “We have implemented a trade and economic partnership with Norway, Iceland, and other EFTA countries, effective October 2025. Just a few months ago, we signed the India-EU FTA, in which Denmark, Finland, and Sweden are also partners. With these trade agreements, we are ushering in a new golden era in India-Nordic relations. We have decided to transform the India-Norway relationship into a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership.”

The Prime Minister said that through this Green Technology Partnership, we will combine Iceland’s zero thermal inefficiencies, Norway’s blue economy, and sustainability expertise in the Arctic and maritime sectors of all Nordic countries with India’s scale to ensure a better future for the entire world. By forming this unique strategic partnership, we will combine Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defense, Finland’s telecom and digital technologies, Denmark’s cybersecurity and high-tech with India’s talent to develop reliable solutions for the entire world. Our extensive research and innovation are also an important pillar of the India-Nordic partnership. To strengthen this, we will work together to enhance linkages between universities, startups, and the lab ecosystem. We will deepen our cooperation in Arctic and polar research. We will ensure new opportunities for skill development and mobility between India and the Nordic countries.

He said, “We also shared our views on global issues. In times of global tension and conflict, India and the Nordic countries will continue to work together to promote a rules-based global order. Whether in Ukraine or West Asia, we will continue to support efforts for an early end to conflict and peace. We agree that reform of multilateral institutions is necessary and urgent.”

New Delhi, May 19 Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the central government is constantly updating and revising minority welfare schemes. He appealed to state governments to submit proposals related to minority welfare on time so that the schemes can be implemented effectively.

Speaking to reporters after addressing the conference of State Minority Commissions organized by the National Commission for Minorities, Rijiju said, “We will keep updating. That is why we keep revising minority welfare schemes. State governments are requested to send proposals as soon as possible.”

Responding to allegations by some political parties regarding Hajj, the minister said, “Muslims going on Hajj go with their own money. The Indian government does not provide even a single rupee for Hajj. Those who go on Hajj bear the expenses themselves. Some politicians are spreading misinformation on social media, which is not right.”

Rijiju said, “If we consider the Muslim population as a separate country, it would become the sixth largest in the world. Meanwhile, the Parsi community has a population of around 52,000-53,000, equivalent to a large village. Both have minority status.”

The primary objective of this one-day conference, organized by the National Commission for Minorities, was to review the functioning of state minority commissions and evaluate ongoing welfare schemes for minority communities. Minority welfare ministers from several states attended the conference.

Posting a photo of the conference on the social media platform X, Kiren Rijiju wrote, “It is a privilege to attend the conference held at Sushma Swaraj Bhavan.” He praised the team of the National Commission for Minorities, saying that the conference discussed development issues and assessed the performance of states.

The minister stressed the need to make minority commissions more effective so that development plans reach the last mile. He said that good work is being done in some states, but further improvement is needed in others.

New Delhi: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways  Nitin Gadkari today inspected the DND–Faridabad–Sohna Access Controlled Highway Project, being developed to enhance connectivity in the Delhi–NCR region and provide seamless access to the Noida International Airport at Jewar and the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway.

The inspection was carried out in the presence of the Chief Minister of NCT of Delhi, Smt. Rekha Gupta, Union Ministers of State Sh. Ajay Tamta, Sh. Harsh Malhotra and Sh. Krishan Pal Gurjar, Delhi PWD Minister Sh. Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, Haryana PWD Minister Sh. Ranbir Singh Gangwa, Member of Parliament from South Delhi Sh. Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, and former MP Sh. Ramesh Bidhuri.

Developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, the access-controlled highway project has a total length of approximately 59.063 km and an estimated cost of ₹4,463 crore. The corridor will connect Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram, and Sohna through a high-speed, six-lane access-controlled highway.

The project incorporates several advanced engineering features and modern construction technologies. One of its key highlights is the construction of a 140-metre-long Network Arch Bridge (NAB), among the most advanced steel bridge structures in India. The bridge has been designed using modern tied-arch technology with a crossed hanger arrangement, enhancing structural strength, durability, and resilience during seismic activity.

The project also employs several innovative construction methodologies, including the use of removable temporary steel pile supports over irrigation canals, precast segmental construction technology, launching girders, high-strength E450 steel, Grade 10.9 bolts, high-damping rubber bearings, and swivel expansion joints.

The highway project emphasizes sustainable and environment-friendly construction practices. Approximately 2 lakh metric tonnes of inert material generated from the bio-mining of the Okhla Landfill and Ghazipur Landfill have been utilized in road construction, reducing dependence on natural borrow materials. The project also includes noise barriers, landscaping, and plantation works.

Overall, the highway project represents a landmark infrastructure development showcasing modern bridge engineering, advanced construction technologies, sustainable practices, and improved regional connectivity. Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel time, improve traffic movement, promote economic growth, and strengthen transportation infrastructure across the NCR region.

DND–Faridabad Connectivity to Noida International Airport

With the objective of improving connectivity to the proposed Noida International Airport at Jewar—envisaged to reduce air traffic pressure on the Indira Gandhi International Airport—a dedicated connectivity project is being developed linking the airport to the DND–Faridabad Bypass in Haryana and the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway.

The project will also connect the Yamuna Expressway and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. It involves the construction of a fully access-controlled highway from Chandawali village in Faridabad, Haryana to near Dayanapur in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, with a six-lane divided carriageway using flexible pavement.

The 31.425 km-long expressway project is being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹2,360 crore. Upon completion, traffic coming from northern India will be able to access the Noida International Airport via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), thereby substantially reducing traffic pressure on Delhi.

Additionally, traffic from South Delhi, Faridabad, and Gurugram will be able to reach the airport directly and efficiently. The project includes four major interchanges located at the DND–Sohna Highway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and at the DFCC crossing, along with a Rail Over Bridge (ROB).

A proposed elevated corridor and an 8-lane ROB at the DFCCIL crossing will provide direct and faster connectivity from South Delhi, Faridabad, and Gurugram to the Noida International Airport at Jewar. The project is expected to boost economic growth and improve logistics efficiency across the National Capital Region (NCR).

The corridor forms an important part of the greenfield connectivity between the DND–Ballabhgarh Bypass and the Noida International Airport, linking it with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway. It also passes through areas identified under the Faridabad Master Plan 2031, which are designated for high-density urban development and future infrastructure expansion.

New Delhi, May 17  Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Arshad Madani has said that there is a systematic attempt to transform the country into an ideological nation. Madani said that earlier only Muslims were targeted, but now Islam is also being targeted. He said that Muslims have never bowed down and will never bow down.

Arshad Madani released the manifesto of the two-day meeting of the working committee of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind on Sunday on the social media platform ‘X’. Madani said, “The current situation in the country, the growing communalism, the silence of constitutional institutions, the increasing steps against Muslims and Islamic symbols, and the hate-based politics are extremely worrying. However, Muslims have never bowed down and will never bow down. They can bow down to love, but they can never be bowed down to force, threats, and oppression.”

Madani wrote in the post, “The politics of hate in the country has now transformed into the politics of intimidation, aimed at terrorizing Muslims and forcing them to live on their own terms. Peace and unity are being dangerously compromised in pursuit of power, resulting in a steady rise in religious frenzy and hatred, while law enforcers remain mute spectators. After the recent elections, the trend of some politicians gaining power through hate has intensified. Religious sentiments are being incited to pit the majority community against the minority, while governments are run not by fear and intimidation but by justice and fairness.”

Arshad Madani referred to a statement by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Madani said, “The newly elected Chief Minister of West Bengal’s statement that he will ‘work only for Hindus’ is completely against constitutional and democratic values, as every Chief Minister takes an oath to provide justice to all citizens. The responsibility of those in power is to protect the constitutional rights of every citizen, not to engage in the politics of hatred and division against any particular class.”

Additionally, Madani said in the ‘X’ post, “Attempts are being made to systematically transform the country into an ideological nation. Steps like the Uniform Civil Code, making Vande Mataram compulsory, actions against mosques and madrasas, and depriving genuine citizens of voting rights under the guise of SIR are all part of this process.” Madani said that Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind will continue its legal and democratic fight against all these steps.

Madani also said that previous governments also harmed Muslims socially, educationally, politically, and economically, but today the situation has become even more serious. Earlier, only Muslims were targeted. Now, Islam is also being targeted. Arshad Madani said, “The laws enacted after 2014 and recent actions are clear evidence that the current government wants to harm not only Muslims, but also Islam.”

The president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind concluded his post by writing, “We appeal to all justice-loving parties, social organizations, and citizens with a national interest to unite and fight communal and fascist forces at a democratic and social level, and to jointly fight for brotherhood, tolerance, justice, and the supremacy of the Constitution in the country.”

Bhopal/Ratlam, May 17 The swift emergency evacuation carried out in about 15 minutes by Railway Protection Force personnel and railway staff deployed on the train played a key role in safely evacuating all 68 passengers from the B-1 coach of the Rajdhani Express on Sunday.

The incident occurred at 5:30 a.m. Sunday between Luni Richha and Vikramgarh Alot stations under the Kota division of West Central Railway, about 110 kilometers from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.

The fire reportedly broke out in the B-1 third AC coach of the train, located near the SLR luggage brake van at the front of the Delhi-bound premium train. Initially, thick smoke was seen emanating from the underside of the coach, and within moments, the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the third AC and adjacent SLR coaches. The high flames were visible from a considerable distance.

Due to the train guard’s presence of mind and prompt action, a major accident was averted. The guard immediately noticed the fire and informed the loco pilot, following which the speeding train was immediately stopped.

Passengers were temporarily relocated to other coaches while railway police and railway employees battled the fire to evacuate passengers safely.

Fire brigade teams and senior railway officials, including the Ratlam Divisional Railway Manager, arrived at the scene and supervised the rescue and relief operations.

For safety reasons, the overhead power supply was shut off, and the two damaged coaches were detached from the train. According to the Senior Divisional Railway Manager, no passengers or railway employees were reported injured in the incident, but rail operations were severely affected.

Several trains on the New Delhi-Mumbai rail line, including the Mumbai Jaipur Superfast Express, were stopped at various stations while the track was later cleared.

Initial reports suggest a short circuit as the cause of the fire. However, senior officials have ordered a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause.

Railway officials said arrangements are being made to add an additional coach at Kota station for the rescued passengers to continue their journey.

New Delhi, May 17 In a major step towards strengthening the country’s judicial system, President Draupadi Murmu has approved an increase in the number of judges in the Supreme Court. The President issued the “Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026,” which now increases the approved number of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 to 37. The Chief Justice of India will not be included in this ordinance.

The primary objective of this decision is to reduce the growing backlog of cases in the Supreme Court and ensure speedy justice for the people. It is believed that the increased number of judges will expedite the hearing of cases and facilitate the early disposal of long-pending cases.

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal shared this information on the social media platform ‘X’. He stated that the President has approved an ordinance amending the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, to increase the number of judges.

This ordinance comes just days after the Central Government’s decision, in which the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court by four new judges. Previously, on May 5, at a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was decided to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, in Parliament.

The government states that this step was necessary due to the ever-increasing workload and pending cases in the Supreme Court. The appointment of new judges will enhance the court’s efficiency and help reduce delays in hearings.

The first law to increase the number of Supreme Court judges in India was enacted in 1956. Subsequently, the number of judges has been revised from time to time to meet the evolving needs of the judiciary.

Earlier in 2019, the number of Supreme Court judges was increased from 30 to 33. Now, with the new ordinance, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice of India, will be 38. This is being considered an important step towards further strengthening the country’s judicial system and providing timely justice to the people.
