Earthquake jolted Southern California at a magnitude of 4.6

Earthquake today in South California Los Angeles now: An earthquake shook Southern California. The quake struck just after 11:30 p.m. and was initially rated as a magnitude-4.6 temblor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered about 1.8 miles west southwest of El Monte. Dr. Lucy Jones, Seismologist, Founder & Chief Scientist, tweeted “Yes. A M4.6 2 mi WSW of El Monte at 11:38. Almost the same location as the M5.9 Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987”.

She further mentioned that “Although tonight’s quake is in the same location as 1987 Whittier Narrows, it is not considered an aftershock because the aftershocks died off completely in less than 2 years. Mor about aftershocks and other facts of earthquake clustering in my podcast”.

She also said, “A good reminder that earthquakes really can happen just about anywhere – they just happen much less frequently in places like Michigan.”

“What a jolt! We felt it too,” tweeted the San Gabriel Police Department, located very close to the epicenter. “No damage or injuries reported so far. No need to call 9-1-1 unless you have an emergency.”
