Farmer movement agitated, police fired tear gas shells

New Delhi | Police were forced to fire tear gas shells near Akshardham temple and Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar on Tuesday when farmers protesting the agricultural laws came out on violence during the tractor parade. Most of the farmers were youths who, despite being allowed to enter Delhi by the police, did not follow the stipulated time and conditions and became furious. They proceeded by removing the barricades planted by the police near the Ghazipur entry point on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border and near the Singhu and Tikri points on the Delhi-Haryana border.

As soon as they reached Akshardham, the police had to release tear gas shells. The farmers then started throwing stones at the police. The glasses of several buses parked on the roads were broken. A similar view was also on the route coming from the Singhu border to Sanjay Gandhi Transport. Here, the police had to fire tear gas to disperse the fierce crowd.

Significantly, the Delhi Police had allowed the tractor parade to the farmers on the condition that they would enter Delhi only after the Republic Day parade was over.

These farmers have been standing on the borders of Delhi since 26 November last year, demanding the complete repeal of the three new agricultural laws and ensuring a valid guarantee of minimum support price for their crops. Till now, 11 rounds of talks have been held between the government and farmer organizations, but some positive results have not been found.
