Sikkim : honoured to join the grand celebration of Sikkim’s 50 Glorious Years of Statehood this morning at Paljor Stadium, in the esteemed presence of Hon’ble Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur Ji.
As we mark this historic milestone, I extend my heartiest gratitude and pride to every citizen of Sikkim. On May 16, 1975, our state entered a new era as part of the Indian Union, a journey shaped by unity, progress, and the realization of democratic aspirations.
On this Golden Jubilee, we celebrate our collective commitment to the vision of a Sunaulo Sikkim, Samridha Sikkim, ani Samarth Sikkim – a capable, prosperous, and golden Sikkim, in alignment with the national mission of Viksit Bharat under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
We pay tribute to the Kingdom of Sikkim, whose foresight laid the foundation of our identity. The Sikkim Subject status and Article 371F remain vital cornerstones of our constitutional journey, safeguarding our rights, customs, and heritage.
Sikkim’s transformation over the past 50 years from monarchy to democracy has been defined by resilience, inclusive growth, and environmental stewardship. Our diverse communities – Bhutia, Lepcha, Nepali, and others have together built a vibrant, peaceful, and culturally rich society.
This historic day is significant in five key dimensions:
Integration with India, democratic fulfilment, rapid development, national security, and cultural preservation.
Today, Sikkim stands tall with remarkable achievements:
• Highest per capita income in India and a fast-growing GSDP
• Leading in education, healthcare, climate action, and sustainable development
• Recognized as India’s first fully organic state
• 90.67% literacy, over 730 government schools, and near-universal educational access
• Robust healthcare infrastructure, with 94.7% institutional deliveries and leadership in HIV/AIDS and TB control
• Progressive governance, with strong gender representation in Panchayats and public services
Through impactful initiatives like Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana, Vatsalya, and Nasha Mukt Sikkim, we continue to uplift lives and promote social equity.
We are grateful to the Government of India for its support in preserving our identity and driving progress. As a border state, Sikkim remains committed to peace, national integrity, and security.
In the face of challenges like the 2011 earthquake, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the GLOF of 2023, the resilience, unity, and spirit of our people have shone through. Brick by brick, we have rebuilt stronger – guided by compassion, courage, and collective resolve.
As we look to the next 50 years, let us continue building a Sikkim that is more vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable, drawing strength from our past and vision from our shared destiny.
