Officially, her first Hindi song was “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the film Gajaabhaau. Music director Ghulam Haider gave Lata her first major break with the song “Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora” and told that producers and directors would “fall at Lata’s feet” and “beg her” to sing in their movies as initially she was rejected by producer Sashadhar Mukherjee.

Her songs in renowned films like Barsaat, Anarkali, Nagin, Mother India, Madhumati, and Mughal-E-Azambeing were the prime examples of the early ‘Golden era’ of the 1950s and 60s; and hit blockbusters like Pakeezah, Bobby, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, Dil To Paagal Hai were being remembered for her soulful songs.
