New Delhi: In Hindi cinema, there are certain voices that, the moment they are heard, bring back vivid memories of classic songs. Anuradha Paudwal is one such singer. During the 1980s and 1990s, the magic of her voice captivated audiences everywhere. Her songs could be heard everywhere, and many even compared her to the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. Films like ‘Aashiqui’, ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin’, and ‘Beta’ made her a household name. However, at the very peak of her career, she made a decision that altered the trajectory of both her life and her professional journey.
Anuradha Paudwal was born on October 27, 1954, and spent her childhood in Mumbai. From a young age, she harbored a deep passion for films and music. She began her career with the 1973 film ‘Abhimaan’, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.
From that point on, there was no looking back for Anuradha. She gradually carved out a space for herself in the film industry, eventually landing an opportunity to sing a solo track for the movie ‘Aap Beeti’. Over time, she collaborated with numerous music composers and won the hearts of listeners with her voice.
A major turning point in Anuradha Paudwal’s career arrived with the success of the songs from the film ‘Hero’. She formed a highly successful partnership with the music composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Subsequently, she lent her voice to many memorable songs in films such as ‘Meri Jung’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, and ‘Tezaab’. In the 1990s, the film ‘Aashiqui’—featuring music by Nadeem-Shravan—propelled her popularity to new heights. Songs from this film—such as “Nazar Ke Saamne,” “Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana,” and “Jaane Jigar Jaaneman”—remain among the favorites of music lovers even today.
During that era, Anuradha Paudwal was counted among the most prominent playback singers in Hindi cinema. Her voice possessed a unique sweetness that lent itself perfectly to everything from romantic tracks to emotionally charged songs. At the height of her success, she made the unexpected decision to step away from film music. While most artists strive to reach even greater heights once they attain the peak of their careers, Anuradha chose a different path.
After moving away from film music, Anuradha Paudwal shifted her focus toward devotional music. Her renditions of *bhajans* (hymns) and *devi geet* (devotional songs dedicated to the Goddess) were widely embraced by the public. Whether it is during Navratri, Diwali, or Chhath Puja, her devotional songs can still be heard in many homes and places of worship today.
For her contributions to the world of music, Anuradha Paudwal has received numerous prestigious accolades. She has been honored with four Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award. In 2017, the Government of India conferred upon her the Padma Shri.
