Rajiv Kumar will take charge of CEC today

New Delhi | Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will take over as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner on Sunday. On Saturday, Sushil Chandra stepped down after completing his term as CEC.

The government May 12 appointed Rajiv Kumar, the senior-most election commissioner, as the new Chief Election Commissioner of India with effect from May 15.

Rajiv Kumar is the senior-most election commissioner in the three-member Election Commission after Sushil Chandra.

An official statement from the Law Ministry said, “The President is pleased to appoint Rajiv Kumar, the senior-most Election Commissioner, as the Chief Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India. Rajeev Kumar will take over as the Chief Election Commissioner of India after he demits office in 2022.

Rajiv Kumar, a 1984 batch IAS officer, was appointed as the Election Commissioner in September 2020.

He had retired as finance secretary in February. During his more than three-decade tenure in the government, he served in various ministries at the Center and in the state cadres of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Kumar joined as the Election Commissioner in place of the then Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa.
