Social media platforms will not be able to do arbitrary, government releases new guidelines

New Delhi| The central government has issued new guidelines in view of complaints from users of various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter. The government has notified IT Rules, 2021. Now the social media platform will have to create a grievance redressal mechanism to listen to the complaints of the users. At the same time, the OTT platform has to be self-regulating.

Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry Prakash Javadekar and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told the press conference that the social media platform will have to follow strict rules. Complaints from social media users and victims have to be heard. The dignity and safety of women have to be ensured. Chief Compliance Officer will have to be appointed. There are 53 crore WhatsApp users in the country, 44.8 million YouTube, 41 crores Facebook, 21 crores Insta and 1.75 crores Twitter users.
