Supreme Court refuses to hear plea to ban farmers’ tractor rally

NEW DELHI| The Supreme Court has refused to hear the application of the Delhi Police to stop the tractor rally to be taken out of the farmer’s unions in the capital city on Republic Day. On Wednesday, Chief Justice S.A. The bench headed by Bobde said that it is not right for the court to interfere in the case, as the police have the first right to decide on the issue of law and order. The apex court also turned down the Central Government’s request for a hearing on the case on January 25 and kept the application pending. After this, the Center withdrew its application.

Chief Justice of India Attorney General K.K. Venugopal and Solicitor General told Tushar Mehta, you are executive, you also have the authority to act through the police. The Center has powers to act on law and order, we will not interfere.

On Monday, the apex court had said that the Delhi Police and not the court had the authority to decide on the tractor rally.

The Center had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court through the Delhi Police seeking a stay on the tractor/trolley/vehicle march or any other manner of a rally held in the national capital on Republic Day.

The Center said it has come to the notice of security agencies that groups of protesting individuals/organizations have planned to take out a tractor/trolley/vehicle march on Republic Day on 26 January.

The Center said, any disruption or hindrance in the work of Republic Day will not only be against law and order but will also be a huge embarrassment for the nation.
