Atiq Ahmed and his brother shot dead in presence of police, media

Prayagraj (UP) | In a shocking incident, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj on Saturday night in the presence of police and media. Ateeq and his brother were shot when they were taken to Colvin Hospital for medical examination. Both died on the spot. According to reports, Atiq was shot in the head when media persons were talking to him. Both the brothers were handcuffed at the time of the incident.

All the three shooters have been arrested by the UP police. They have been identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya and Sunny. Atiq and Ashraf were murdered on the day when Atiq’s son Asad was handed over to Prayagraj, Asad had an encounter in Jhansi on Thursday.

According to reports, the three youths had joined a group of journalists, and Atiq Ahmed was talking to them after his brother Ashraf came out of the hospital. Before Ateeq could complete his answer, one of the assailants pointed a pistol at Ateeq’s head and shot him, while the other two accused opened fire on the brother.

After the brothers fell on the ground, the attackers surrendered by raising their hands. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called DGP RK Vishwakarma and other top officials for an emergency meeting. Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Prayagraj as the news of the double murder spread. Additional forces are being sent to the district, security has been increased.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that this incident is the culmination of anarchy in Uttar Pradesh. “If someone can die in police custody, what about the common man,” he tweeted.
