Bommai resigns as Chief Minister of Karnataka, takes responsibility for the defeat

Bengaluru  | Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday resigned from the post of Chief Minister following his defeat in the Karnataka assembly elections. Bommai submitted his resignation to Karnataka Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot at the Raj Bhavan, where he was accompanied by senior BJP leaders.

Talking to reporters after submitting his resignation, the former chief minister said he would take responsibility for the BJP’s defeat in Karnataka.

“Welfare of the people should be ensured without destroying the economy. We will work efficiently as an opposition party,” he said.

He said, “Last time we had won 104 seats. This time the number of seats has decreased despite the higher vote share.”

“A defeat is a defeat. There will be introspection and mistakes will be rectified,” he said.

Bommai said, “We are a national party. We will not work just for elections. We work for nation-building. Lok Sabha elections will come in the next eight to 10 months. We will build the party. But it won’t affect.”
