Bengaluru | The Congress will hold a crucial meeting of its newly elected Legislature Party in Karnataka on Sunday to deliberate and elect its new leader. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday after the results were out, State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said that the party is going to hold a meeting of the Legislature Party on Sunday at 5.30 pm.
He said, “There is no scope for personality worship. The party is supreme. This is not a victory for Siddaramaiah or Shivakumar. It is the result that will unite India.”
Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing assembly Siddaramaiah, who was present at the press meet, said it was a victory for seven crores Kannadigas and not just the Congress. “Whenever the BJP and (JD-S leader HD) Kumaraswamy ruled the state, it was not possible for them to provide a stable government…the people have decided to bring about a change,” he said.
According to party sources, the Legislature Party meeting will reach a consensus on who should be the Chief Minister and other important issues. Observers of the party’s high command will also be present in the meeting.
Sources said that the party is considering creating two to three posts of Deputy Chief Minister in the government.
Rooms have been booked for the newly elected Congress MLAs in two top private hotels in Bengaluru and they have been asked to reach the state capital by Saturday night.
