‘Great progress’ towards agreement with Putin, will talk to Zelensky and NATO leaders: Trump

Anchorage (Alaska), August 16. US President Donald Trump said on Friday that there has been “some progress” in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and they have made “pretty good progress”. However, Trump also made it clear that “until an agreement is reached, it cannot be considered an agreement.”

According to CNN report, after the summit in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday, Trump said that he would soon talk to NATO and other important people. He will also inform Ukrainian President Zelensky about Friday’s conference in Alaska. He said, “The decision is up to him.”

The US President said, “Our meeting was very good and agreement was reached on many points. We have not yet reached a final agreement, but there is a good chance for it.”

Trump said Ukraine would have to “agree” to what Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and others from his administration discussed with Putin on Friday. However, he did not elaborate on the framework of any agreement.

Trump and Putin did not take any questions after their statements.

Putin began speaking first and spoke for about eight minutes. Trump, who is usually known for long and open press conferences, spoke for only four minutes. “I will now make some phone calls and tell them what happened,” Trump said.

Putin said at the press conference that US-Russia relations have deteriorated in recent years. Usually when the US President hosts a foreign leader, the US leader speaks first, then the guest.

Putin said that to end the Ukraine war, it is necessary to remove the main causes of the war. He asked Ukrainian and European leaders not to interfere with the “emerging progress”.

The talks between Putin and Trump took place in an atmosphere of respect, constructive and mutual respect. Putin said he agreed that Ukraine’s security must be ensured.

Trump claimed that if he were president in 2022, there would be no war in Ukraine. He said he had to make several phone calls after the summit, including talks with NATO, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other officials.

On Friday, Russian President Putin said Trump’s claim was correct, as he had said earlier.

Putin said that in 2022 he had tried to convince US President Biden not to let the situation deteriorate so much that a serious situation like military action could arise.

Putin said Trump and I had a very good and trusting contact. I am confident that by moving forward on this path we can end the Ukraine crisis as soon as possible.

At a press conference in Anchorage, Alaska, Putin asked Ukrainian and European leaders not to interfere in the process. He said we hope Kiev and European countries will adopt a positive attitude and will not try to obstruct progress.

Putin said during a press conference in Alaska on Friday that the situation in Ukraine is related to fundamental threats to our security. He wants to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. For this, it is necessary to remove the root causes of the conflict. He and US President Trump are ready to work together in this direction. They hope that their talks will pave the way for peace in Ukraine. Putin also suggested to hold the next meeting with Trump in Moscow. Trump gave a mixed response to this proposal. He said that accepting it could be controversial, but he did not completely rule out its possibility.

Trump also said that he always had a very good relationship with Putin, but the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 US election made it difficult during his first term.

After three hours of talks on Ukraine in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday, the two leaders declared a major breakthrough. However, neither leader gave details of the agreement nor said whether there would be a ceasefire.
