‘Initially, I felt afraid—am I worthy of this?’: Sai Pallavi and Ranbir Kapoor on playing Sita and Ram

Mumbai: Actors Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi are currently the talk of the town for the film ‘Ramayana’. While Ranbir portrays Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi plays the role of Mata Sita. The duo appeared on the Diwali special episode of Amitabh Bachchan’s quiz show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, to promote the film. During the episode, both actors spoke about their respective roles, describing them as a significant responsibility.

On the show, Ranbir shared the thoughts that crossed his mind after being offered the role of Lord Ram, as well as his journey of preparing for the character. He told Amitabh Bachchan, “When I was offered this role, I knew it wasn’t just a part to play—it was a massive responsibility. My initial reaction was fear. I wondered, ‘Am I worthy of this role? Will I be able to do justice to it?’ After all, the faith of millions is tied to Lord Ram.”

Ranbir added, “Gradually, that fear transformed into a sense of gratitude. I realized that at this stage in my life, I have been given the opportunity to portray a character that could help me become not only a better artist but also a better human being.”

He continued, “Around the same time, I became a father for the first time with the birth of my daughter, Raha. I see this as a gift from God—an opportunity to evolve into a better person. I’ve had the chance to delve deep into the ‘Ramayana’ and work alongside such wonderful people.”

Concluding his thoughts, Ranbir said, “Sir, while it is impossible for us to truly become like Lord Ram, learning from his ideals is a profound experience for all of us.”

Meanwhile, Sai Pallavi shared that while portraying Mata Sita, she chose not to overthink, preferring instead to remain open to the experience itself. She said, “This time, I didn’t want to overthink things. Usually, whenever I take on a character, I consider what I can contribute to that role. But for the first time—while preparing to play the role of Mother Sita—a different question crossed my mind: what will I gain from this character? What wisdom might I acquire, and what lessons can I learn from it?”

Sai Pallavi added, “I wanted to keep my mind as open and transparent as possible, based on everything I already know about Mother Sita. I didn’t want to form any preconceived notions. I simply prayed, ‘Mother, please bestow your grace upon me as I take on this role.’ With that sentiment, I dedicated myself entirely to the character.”
