New Delhi Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday urged to follow and preserve constitutional values and parliamentary traditions as the country moves forward in effectively discharging parliamentary duties.
Speaking at a function organized in the Central Chamber of Parliament to commemorate the rich heritage of the Indian Parliament, Kharge reminded that the meetings of the Constituent Assembly were held in the chamber.
The Congress President said that the Constitution of India is the basis of Indian democratic politics. It was in this Central Hall that the Constituent Assembly held its meetings for a period of 2 years, 11 months and 17 days from 1946 to 1949.
He further said that today, we humbly remember the unprecedented contributions made by the first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr. BR Ambedkar.
This is G.V. It is also an opportunity to remember the contribution of Mavalankar, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and acknowledge the collective contribution of the members of the Constituent Assembly, the Provisional Parliament, the first and all subsequent Lok Sabhas.
The Congress president also said that the collective efforts of the MPs have laid a strong foundation for the development of India as a nation. The success of institutions lies in upholding constitutional values and ideals.
He said that we must be committed to adhering to and preserving the constitutional values and parliamentary traditions as the country moves forward in our efforts to effectively discharge parliamentary duties and for the development of our nation.
This is all because of the collective and dedicated efforts of parliamentarians cutting across party lines over the last 75 years.
He said, “Today as we say goodbye to Parliament House and move towards the new Parliament House, I am overwhelmed with emotions and compassion. Of course, we will continue our parliamentary duties in the new Parliament building but will miss the old building.
The Congress president said the Central Hall was witness to Pandit Nehru’s ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech on the eve of India’s independence. And, the Prime Minister also mentioned this in his speech yesterday and I am grateful to you for remembering this on this historic occasion.
