Kharge hoisted the tricolor, said- democracy and constitution are facing danger

New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday unfurled the tricolor at the party headquarters here on the occasion of Independence Day and hit out at the Centre, saying democracy and the Constitution were facing grave danger.

Senior party leaders Rahul Gandhi, Meira Kumar, Ambika Soni, Salman Khurshid along with other members and workers were present at the Congress headquarters.

Addressing the gathering after the flag hoisting, Kharge said, “Nation-building is a continuous process and our freedom fighters as well as our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru have fulfilled the aspirations with their contributions.”

The Congress leader said, “But nowadays some people project in such a way that no development is taking place. But it is not so. When the British left India, nothing was left and we were able to make even a needle.” were not.” He took a jibe at the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kharge said Nehru set up steel plants, created public sector units, and created employment opportunities for the youth of the country.

“He also established IIT, IIM, AIIMS, space research institute ISRO and laid the foundation of nuclear research in the country,” the Congress president said.

He also lauded the role of late Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi in ushering in the Green Revolution and ensuring food supply in the country.

Kharge also appreciated Indira Gandhi’s role in changing the map of the world by creating Bangladesh.

The Congress leader then highlighted the role of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in bringing telecom revolution in the country.

He also said that Assam Accord, Mizoram Accord, Shillong Accord and many other agreements were signed for peace in the country.

Kharge P.V. Narasimha Rao’s tenure also highlighted the openness of the Indian economy. 

Criticizing the government, he said, “Today I am sad to say that democracy, constitution and institutions are facing grave danger. Opposition members in Parliament are being suspended and their voices are being silenced.” And today people say that we are strengthening democracy.” ,

He said, “When I stand up to speak in Parliament, my mike is switched off. All this is going on while we pretend to be the biggest democracy. Democracy and the Constitution are our soul and we are today Let’s take a pledge that for the sake of peace, to protect democracy, we will save the Constitution and the country.” 

Earlier in the day, Kharge skipped the Independence Day event at the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister unfurled the national flag.
