New Delhi: With the aim to make New Delhi as a Plastic Free Zone, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has drawn a road map to impose a ban on plastic carry bags and discourage single use plastic items in phase manners.
A public notice has been issued by NDMC in this regard in accordance with Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2021 notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
New Delhi Municipal Council exercising its power under subsection (z) of section 12 of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Act 1994 has imposed a complete ban on the sale, use, stocking and distribution of plastic carry bags (virgin or recycled) less than 75 microns henceforth .
The manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single use plastic commodities including polystyrene expanded polystyrene shall be prohibited w.e.f 01st July, 2022.
Single use plastic items like Ear buds with plastic sticks, Plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, stirrers, trays. wrapping or packaging films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns are being discouraged in NDMC area.
NDMC has also imposed complete ban on the sale, use, stocking and distribution of plastic carry bags (virgin or recycled) less than 120 microns w.e.f. 31 December, 2022.
If any person found in violation of this Notification he or she shall be liable to pay environmental compensation of Rs. 5000 per default.
The Chairman, NDMC appealed to the visitors, customers and residents of New Delhi area to reduce the use of single use plastic in day to day life activities, so that Civic body could achieve the target of making city single use plastic free. He also urged the RWAs, MTAs , NGOs as well as government and non-government offices to join the initiatives launched by the civic body to eliminate the plastic waste from the streets, lanes, Roads and other public places.
He further informed that NDMC is organising various awareness programmes in market, residential area and prominent public areas on behavioral change to reduce, reuse and recycle the plastic and “Say No to single use plastic” in the New Delhi area. The NDMC area’s Safai sewak will also visit shops in market areas to create awareness about this initiative.
