Next CJI Justice Lalit announces major reforms in respect of the constitution benches

New Delhi| The next Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice U. You. Lalit on Friday announced three reforms during his tenure. Organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Chief Justice N. In his address at the farewell function of V. Ramana, Justice Lalit talked about three reforms that he wanted to make the list of cases clear and transparent, a clear mechanism for mentioning urgent matters before the respective benches. and want a Constitution Bench to function throughout the year.

On matters listed before constitution benches and especially three-judge benches, he said, “I have always believed that the role of the Supreme Court is to legislate with clarity. The best way to do this is through larger benches so that the issues to be clarified immediately.”

He further said, “So that there is uniformity and people are well aware of what is the contours of the peculiar state of the law. We will work hard to always have at least one Constitution Bench throughout the year.”

He cited two major achievements of Chief Justice Ramana – one, the clearing of judicial vacancies and second, the focus on issues related to judicial infrastructure. He further said that more than 200 appointments of judges of various High Courts were made during the tenure of CJI Ramana.

Justice Lalit said, “The second aspect that I noticed was the way Justice Ramana tried to persuade all Chief Justices and Chief Ministers to focus on issues related to infrastructure in the lower judiciary at the conference of Chief Justices and Chief Ministers.” He was remarkable.”

Justice Lalit pointed out that the efforts made by CJI Ramana are resonating now when NALSA (National Legal Services Authority) is taking steps to set up Legal Aid Defense Counsel Offices in all districts.
