New Delhi, Oct 6 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep outrage over the mistreatment of Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai in the Supreme Court premises. He said such reprehensible incidents have no place in a democratic society and that people across the country are distressed by this attack.
Prime Minister Modi wrote in a post on the social media platform, “Spoke to the Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai. Every Indian is distressed by the attack on him in the Supreme Court premises this morning. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. This is highly condemnable. I commend Justice Gavai for his composure in such a situation. It reflects his commitment to the values of justice and his commitment to strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”
It should be noted that a lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, created a ruckus during a hearing in the court of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai on Monday. It is alleged that the lawyer misbehaved with the CJI and shouted slogans in the court, after which he was taken into custody.
In fact, while the bench headed by the CJI was hearing mentions of lawyers for a case, the lawyer became agitated. It is reported that the lawyer also shouted, “We will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan.” However, CJI Gavai remained calm and continued the hearing.
The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association has condemned the incident. The association stated, “We unanimously express our anguish at the actions of a lawyer who, through his inappropriate and unruly behavior, attempted to disrespect the position and authority of the Chief Justice of India and his fellow judges.”
The association passed a resolution stating that such behavior is not only unacceptable for a member of the bar, but also undermines the foundation of mutual respect between the bench and the bar. The association termed it an attack on the independence of the judiciary and public confidence.
