Over 125 killed in 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey, Syria

Addressing reporters, Turkey’s Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said that 10 cities of Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Osmania, Adıyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakır and Kilis were affected by the earthquake.

About 440 people have been injured in this disaster.

Meanwhile, Syrian state media said 50 people were killed in the earthquake, which was also felt in Lebanon and Cyprus.

State media said the deaths were reported in the areas of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia.

The earthquake was followed by another earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale at 4.26 am, Xinhua news agency quoted Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) as saying.

AFAD said at least 50 aftershocks were recorded with a maximum magnitude of 6.6.

Major damage was reported in at least 10 provinces of southern Turkey.

Turkey is located in one of the most active earthquake zones in the world.

In 1999, a powerful earthquake struck the northwest of the country, killing more than 17,000 people.

Recently, on October 30, 2020, another earthquake of magnitude 7.0 hit the city of Izmir, killing 117 people.
