New Delhi, February 14 Donald Trump’s announcement to send Tahawwur Rana to India is being widely welcomed. It is also being seen as a sign of America’s support to India against terrorism. Tahawwur Rana is the main accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
An interesting aspect was added to this case when a popular handle named “Modi Archive” on the social media platform ‘X’ shared an old video from 2011. In this, the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had strongly criticized the acquittal of Tahawwur Rana by a US court. He called it a dangerous precedent.
In the video shared by Modi Archive, the then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi can be seen raising serious questions about the questionable handling of Tahawwur Rana’s case in the US and the flaws in its justice system.
In the video, Narendra Modi was seen raising the question, “How can a US court pronounce the verdict on a terror attack in India? Will the US allow the trial of 9/11 attack accused in India?” he asked.
He warned that such a verdict could teach other terrorists how to evade the law, posing a serious security threat.
Now, fourteen years later, US President Donald Trump has raised the same concern. He categorically announced that Tahawwur Rana will be handed over to India. Trump described Rana as a “very violent and dangerous individual” and said he will have to face justice in India.
I am pleased to announce that my administration has approved the extradition of the main conspirator of the 26/11 attacks and one of the worst human beings in the world to India. He will soon be sent to India where he will face the justice process,” Trump said in a joint press conference with Modi.
When Rana was acquitted by a US court in 2011, Modi, as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, had strongly criticized it and also put the then UPA government in the dock.
Now when the US President himself has announced to send terrorist Tahawwur Rana to India, it not only shows India’s growing strength but also reflects its influence at the international level.
