President, PM condoles the demise of Pandit Birju Maharaj

New Delhi | The President, Vice President and Prime Minister condoled the demise of Pandit Birju Maharaj and offered their condolences.

Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away at his home late on Sunday night. He was on dialysis.

President Ram Nath Kovind said, “The passing away of the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj marks the end of an era. This Indian musical and cultural space is a great loss. He became a symbol of unparalleled contribution to popularizing Kathak globally. Condolences to his family and fans.”

Expressing condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Pandit Birju Maharaj ji, who gave Indian dance a special recognition across the world. His passing away is an irreparable loss to the entire art world. In this hour of grief. My condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti!”

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu said, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of the great Kathak dancer, Pandit Birju Maharaj. The world-renowned Kathak exponent with his unique style was an institution and inspiration across the world. His death was a tribute to the world of performing arts. Huge loss. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members. Om Shanti!”

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Pandit Birju ji Maharaj was the originator of the art and culture of India. He popularized the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak dance across the world. Deeply saddened by his passing away. His passing away was a great loss to the world of performing arts. Huge loss. Condolences to his family and fans.”
