Tamil Nadu CM Stalin announces scheme for cultivation of Kuruvai

Chennai | Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced a plan for the cultivation of Kuruvai. The objective of the scheme is to provide equipment subsidy and inputs to farmers for the cultivation of Kuruvai in the Cauvery delta region, the Chief Minister’s Office said in a statement on Thursday. The state government is announcing this package after a gap of three years and the Rs 61.09 crore scheme will be beneficial for 2.07 lakh farmers involved in Kuruvai (short-term) farming in the Cauvery delta.

Rs 50 crore will be used for providing agricultural equipment on subsidy to farmers and Rs 11.09 crore for effective use of water from ponds.

The CMO statement said that it will be implemented in full in the districts of Maladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur and partially in Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Trichy.

Kuruvai is generally cultivated in 3.2 lakh acres in the delta districts. The Agriculture Department will ensure that paddy seeds, bio-fertilizers and other items are in sufficient quantity.

Water was released from the Stanley reservoir at Mettur on June 12 and from Kallanai on June 16 to irrigate agricultural land in the Cauvery delta region.
