UP ATS busts illegal telephone exchange, two arrested

Kanpur| The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (UP ATS) has busted an illegal telephone exchange racket in Kanpur. The racket involved illegally converting incoming calls from Middle-East countries into local calls through telephone exchanges. The accused Mirza Asad and Shahid Jamal have been arrested in the case. Illegal telephone exchanges were running at three places in Kanpur.

The ATS seized 13 activated and four sealed SIM boxes, 4,000 pre-activated SIM cards, a modem router and other electronic equipment from the telephone exchange.

Asad and Jamal told the police that one of the gang members, Nazim Khan, used to make international calls through the internet bypassing the international gateway.

The location and number of the caller were masked to hide his identity.

According to ATS, caller identification is not possible due to bypassing of the international gateway.

A large number of retail SIM vendors are now on the radar of the police. Many more arrests are likely in the coming days.
