You will be surprised to know how many leaders born in Delhi have got the CM’s chair here!

New Delhi, February 20 . A new government has been formed in Delhi and this time the BJP has handed over the command to a woman Chief Minister to lead the government. Delhi has got a new CM in the form of Rekha Gupta. She has become the ninth Chief Minister of the state. Earlier, the Delhi government was run by three more women Chief Ministers, including Sheila Dixit of Congress, Sushma Swaraj of BJP and Atishi Marlena of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

In 1991, the Union Territory of Delhi was formally recognized as Delhi National Capital Territory and the way was cleared for the formation of Legislative Assembly and Council of Ministers here. After this, for the first time in Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Legislative Assembly elections in 1993 and Madan Lal Khurana took oath as the first Chief Minister of Delhi.

If you pay attention to the 9 Chief Ministers of Delhi so far, you will clearly know that the crown of CM has been adorned on the head of those leaders who were born outside Delhi, but started their political career from Delhi. However, one exception to this is Atishi Marlena. She was born in Delhi. But, her parents are also Punjabi Rajputs.

In such a situation, once you pay attention to the names of the Chief Ministers of Delhi so far, you will understand better why such a claim is being made. Actually, Delhi’s first Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana became MLA from Moti Nagar seat here on BJP ticket and he was made the first Chief Minister of Delhi. Whereas, he was born on 15 October 1936 in Lyallpur, Punjab, British India (present Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan) and at the time of partition his entire family came to Delhi.

At the same time, BJP gave Delhi its second CM in the form of Sahib Singh Verma, who won from Shalimar Bagh seat, from where the current Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has won the election. Now one thing is worth noting that Sahib Singh was born in a Jat family on 15 March 1943 in Mundka village situated on the Delhi-Haryana border. Earlier this village was under the influence of Haryana and even today Haryanvi is spoken here.

After this, the third Chief Minister to hold the post of Chief Minister in Delhi was Sushma Swaraj. She was born on 14 February 1952 in Ambala Cantonment, Punjab, which now falls in Haryana.

After this, the power of Delhi came in the hands of Congress and Sheila Dixit remained the Chief Minister of Delhi for 15 years. She was born on 31 March 1938 in Kapurthala, Punjab.

Arvind Kejriwal, the convener of Aam Aadmi Party, which was formed from the Anna movement, then took over the post of Chief Minister of Delhi and he became the CM here three times. However, on 21 September 2024, he resigned from this post and Aam Aadmi Party’s women leader Atishi Marlena was elected to the post of CM by the party MLAs in his place. Let us tell you that Arvind Kejriwal was also not born in Delhi, but he was born on 16 August 1968 in Hisar, Haryana.

It can be said about Delhi’s eighth Chief Minister Atishi Marlena that she was born in Delhi, but her parents Professor Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi also belong to a Punjabi Rajput family. Atishi had told during a press conference in 2019 that she is a Punjabi Rajput. She had said, “I am from a Punjabi Hindu family. I am a Kshatriya. My last name (surname) is Singh.”

Delhi’s current Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was also not born in Delhi. She was born on 19 July 1974 in a Hindu-Vaishya family in Julana, Haryana. In such a situation, the politicians who have come into Delhi politics being born in the surrounding states shows how these states have dominated the politics here.
