Manpreet Singh Sandhu is an Indian field hockey player and the captain of India’s mens national field hockey team since May 2017. His playing position is halfback.

Manpreet Singh Sandhu was born in a farmer’s family in Mithapur near Jalandhar. It is said that Singh took a hockey stick first before a pencil. His two elder brothers, unsurprisingly, are hockey players as well. initially, his mother Manjit and his brothers were against him playing hockey, he eventually convinced them by his talent.

Career
His mother was not a supporter of him playing hockey and had locked him in a room when he was only 10-years-old. He escaped the room and went to his coach. Then after his win in a tournament where he won INR 500 cash, his family started supporting him. He then got enrolled in Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar. He idolizes former German captain, Moritz Furste and holds Sardar Singh as an inspiration.

Manpreet got engaged to Illi Najwa Saddique (or Navpreet), a Malaysian of Pakistan descent, whom he met after one of his matches. After having known each other for 8 years, the two got married on December 16, 2020. The wedding took place at a gurdwara at Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar in Jalndhar.

One day, when I was 10 years old, as I was about to leave for coaching, my brother locked me in a room. However, I managed to get out and join him at the coaching ground. My brother got angry and was about to hit me, but the coach said I should be given a chance to learn the game since I was so keen.”
- During his childhood days, Manpreet’s mother wasn’t supportive of her youngest son playing hockey. She was worried that Manpreet too might break his nose during a game just like his elder brother. His mother came on board when his first hockey win earned him a cash prize of Rs 500. Thereafter, she decided to no longer keep him from the game.
