Tehran,. An emergency meeting of the Iranian Cabinet was called on Monday after President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were confirmed dead in a helicopter crash. This was the second emergency meeting of the Cabinet in less than 24 hours.
President Raisi’s helicopter went missing in the mountainous area of East Azerbaijan, Iran’s northwestern province, on Sunday. Its debris was recovered on Monday and the President’s death was confirmed.
Earlier, in view of the fear of untoward incident, the Iranian Cabinet had held an emergency meeting on Sunday evening. According to the report of government news agency IRNA, it was presided over by the country’s First vice president, Mohammad Mukhbar.
According to protocol, after Raisi’s death, he will become the interim president after getting the approval of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
After this, fresh elections will be held within 50 days.
