New Delhi: The student agitation at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, centered on the demand for the formation of a student union and the conduct of elections, continues. On October 26, the students submitted a formal letter outlining their demands to the Vice-Chancellor. They have made it clear that the hunger strike and peaceful protests will persist until a concrete decision is reached regarding their demands. The primary demand is for the university administration to draft and approve a constitution for the student union by December 20. Furthermore, they have requested that the date for the student union elections be formally announced within 15 days of the constitution’s approval.
The students emphasize that they require a clear timeline for the elections, rather than mere assurances. Additionally, they have called for the withdrawal of all actions taken against the protesting students—specifically demanding the immediate revocation of all disciplinary measures, including show-cause notices, suspensions, bans on campus entry, and expulsions from the university.
They have also demanded that no further disciplinary action be initiated in connection with this protest. The memorandum includes a demand for the resignation of the Chief Security Advisor. Moreover, the students have asserted that engaging in peaceful protest is their constitutional right, and therefore, no student should be expected to apologize for participating in such demonstrations.
In the letter submitted to the Vice-Chancellor, the students have urged the university administration to adopt a clear stance on all their demands and to complete the process of forming a student union within a defined timeframe. They maintain that a firm and positive commitment from the administration is essential to bring the agitation to an end. The students’ core objective is the establishment of a democratically elected student union. The students want the election process to go beyond mere assurances; they are demanding a defined timeline—from the approval of the constitution to the announcement of the election date. For now, the students have announced that they will continue their hunger strike and peaceful protests. They state that they will now be closely monitoring the university administration’s response to this matter and the steps it takes regarding their demands.
