Haaland wins PL Player of the Month award after historic start to season

London: Erling Haaland has been named Premier League Player of the Month for August after a historic start to the season with Manchester City. The Norwegian won the award after scoring seven goals in three games this season, the most by any player in the first three Premier League matches of any campaign.

The striker’s goals included consecutive hat-tricks against Ipswich Town and West Ham United, as well as a goal at Chelsea to help Man City start the season with three wins in three games.

He also became the first player to score hat-tricks in two of the team’s first three league games in a season, since Paul Jewell did so for Bradford City in League Two in 1994/95.

“I am delighted to win this award so early in the season. I am also very grateful to my teammates, coaches and staff for helping to make this possible,” Haaland told Man City’s official website. August was a fantastic month for the team, and I am proud to have played an important role in it. Scoring seven goals in three games last month is fantastic, but I will continue to work hard and improve my game.”

The 24-year-old Norwegian won the award for the third time, having previously won the award in August 2022 and April 2023. Haaland topped an eight-man shortlist that included Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford), Amadou Onana (Aston Villa), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), David Raya (Arsenal), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) and Danny Welbeck (Brighton) when the public’s votes on the EA Sports website were combined with votes from a panel of football experts.

Home against Brentford on Saturday On the field, Man City will be looking to add to their seven goals this season as they return to the Premier League.

“Seven goals in three games last month was fantastic, but I will continue to work hard and improve my game. We have given ourselves a great base on which to build on as we head into a busy period with the Champions League and Carabao Cup coming up. I hope I can continue to help the team win and keep us moving forward in all competitions,” Haaland said.
