Mamta got hurt, not an attack: Election Commission

New Delhi | The Election Commission has on Wednesday dismissed any attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her election campaign in the Nandigram assembly constituency. The commission said that he had an accident, due to which he got hurt. The commission said, “We have not found any evidence to suggest that the planned attack on Mamta’s convoy was carried out. Election Commission said there was no evidence of an attack on the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The Election Commission’s special observers – Ajay Nayak and Vivek Dubey – submitted their report on the incident.

Based on the report of the Special Observers, the Commission said that Director (Security) Vivek Sahay, who was ultimately in charge of their security, could not prevent the Chief Minister from breaking the protocol.

“In fact, Sahay was sitting in the bullet-proof vehicle of the Chief Minister,” he said.

Election Commission observers have suggested taking strict action against Sahay and removing the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of East Midnapore.

The Commission said that no approval was obtained from the Returning Officer for the place where the accident took place and strict violation of the security protocol.

After Wednesday’s incident, the Election Commission sought a report from Bengal Chief Secretary and its special supervisor Nayak and Special Police Supervisor Dubey by Friday evening.
