New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) organized one day workshop on ‘‘No Corporal Punishment’, ‘Treat Children with Love, Respect and Dignity’ and ‘School Based Education for Drug Abuse Prevention’ for Head of the Schools at NDCC Convention Centre, Jai Singh Road, New Delhi today.
NDMC Chairperson, Shri Amit Yadav inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Director (Education), Shri R.P Sati, Dr. Ruchi Shukla from NCERT, Ms. Vandna Anand from Directorate of Education, Ms. Veenu Gaur, Psychologist, Principals, Vice-Principals, HeadMasters of all Atal Adarsh Vidyalaya and Navyug Schools.
While addressing the gathering Chairperson – NDMC, Shri Yadav said that all schools have not only need good infrastructure, faculty, co-curriculum activities but also need the environment of love, respect and dignity for developing the whole personality of the student without any stress of corporal punishment in schools. He also mentioned that the Right to Education Act, Juvenile Justice Act and in this regard certain guidelines issued time to time notified corporal punishment is illegal due to its adverse psychological and physiological impact on the student.
The NDMC Chairperson stressed upon the change of mind set on this issue by the acknowledgement of the incidents, if any.
He said that merely putting the cameras in classrooms or CCTVs in the school corridors are not sufficient for banning corporal punishment but change of mindset for overall development of the students by making love, respect and dignity is necessity need of hours.
Shri Yadav also emphasized on the issue of drug abuse incident in Juvenile age and suggested to the Head of Schools and teachers for regular interaction with students and recognize the early signs and symptoms to take measure in the initial stage. He further said that early counseling is a major step to prevent drug abuse. He directed to the HoS and Principal for monitoring the surrounding area of schools about tobacco and other substance sale and purchase activities.
In his welcome address, Shri R.P Sati emphasized the role of the school to teach skills, to impart knowledge and to establish a sound value base to prevent drug use and to prevent corporal punishment. He informed that the workshop was amazing, enlightening, enhancing and deeply powerful session.
While interacting with the teachers, Dr. Ruchi Shukla, an acclaimed Professor of NCERT elaborated on the significance of a positive environment and a boon for students and teachers. She also said that this workshop has opened new vistas in the thinking process of the teaching faculty and inspired to learn more about corporal punishment’s impact on student.
In the first session, Ms. Vandna Anand from Directorate of Education emphasized on prevention and management of substance misuse. She also elaborated on alternative ways of maintaining discipline.
Ms. Veenu Gaur, psychologist vehemently spoke on the effective strategies for managing classroom behavior.
