Online trading scam: Actress Sumi Bora surrenders to police

Guwahati : Assamese actress Sumi Bora and her husband Tariq Bora, accused in the online trading scam in Assam, surrendered before the police on Thursday.

Assam Police DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh said, “Now their game is over. Congratulations to the STF team.”

A Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police was formed to investigate the trading scam.

Sumi Bora and her husband Tariq Bora surrendered in Dibrugarh and were arrested. Both were absconding since the scam came to light last week. Bora was found to have good relations with Bishal Phukan, the mastermind of the Rs 2,200 crore fraud.

Earlier on Wednesday night, Sumi Bora had posted a video viral on social media, in which she claimed that she has not fled but is hiding due to the propaganda being run against her.

She alleged that a lot of misinformation is being spread. Due to this, her family is suffering a lot. In the video, Bora also said that she would surrender before the police.

Both Phukan and Bora are from Dibrugarh city of Assam. Phukan used Bora’s network in the Assamese film industry to get clients for her company. Sources said that the actress also convinced influential people in society to invest in Phukan’s online trading scheme, which gave her huge returns.

Sumi Bora married photographer Tariq Bora in Udaipur city of Rajasthan last year. People from the Assamese film industry were called to Udaipur and the expenses were borne by Bishal Phukan. He reportedly spent at least Rs 5 crore on Sumi Bora’s wedding.
