Paralympics (javelin throw): Devendra won silver, Sundar got bronze

Tokyo | India’s Devendra Jhazaria and Sundar Singh Gurjar performed brilliantly in the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics here and won silver and bronze medals in the javelin throw F-46 category respectively. Along with Devendra and Sundar winning medals, India has won seven medals in this Paralympic so far. Two-time Paralympic gold medalist Devendra finished second with 64.35 meters. This score of Devendra was his personal best score. Apart from Devendra, Sundar performed his best of the season and scored 64.01 and secured the third position. India won two medals from this event. Sri Lanka’s Herath Mudiyansailaje won the gold medal with a throw of 67.79, setting a world record.

Devendra had earlier won gold medals at the 2004 Athens and 2016 Rio Paralympics. He was expected to bring gold for the third time. However, he missed the gold but he won the medal for the third time.

Meanwhile, two-time world championship gold medalist Sundar won bronze. Sundar started with a throw of 62.26m in the first attempt but in his fifth attempt, he threw 64.01m and took the bronze.

Ajit Singh, another para javelin thrower from India, finished eighth in the event with a score of 56.15.

India has so far won one gold, four silver and two bronze medals in the Tokyo Paralympics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated these athletes on winning the medals of Devendra and Sundar.

Modi tweeted, “Devendra’s best performance. Devendra, one of our veteran athletes, won a silver medal. He is constantly making the country proud. Congratulations to him and best wishes for the future.”

For Sundar, the Prime Minister said, “India is happy to have won Sundar’s bronze. He showed remarkable courage and dedication. Congratulations to Sundar and best wishes for the future.”
