Surajkund, Haryana, February 2, 2024 – President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela today, celebrating India’s rich cultural heritage and artistic excellence.
In her address, the President emphasized that the fair is a vibrant confluence of tradition and innovation, serving as a crucial platform for artisans to connect with art enthusiasts. She highlighted its dual significance as both an art exhibition and a business hub, fostering cultural exchange and economic growth.
“Art and craft transcend borders, building bridges of understanding among people,” she stated, recognizing artists and craftspeople as cultural ambassadors. She commended Gujarat, this year’s partner state, for its distinguished artistic traditions and lauded the North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation for its role as the cultural partner.
President Murmu also praised artisans for preserving India’s artistic legacy, noting their craftsmanship in sculpting, painting, metalwork, and textile weaving. “These artisans breathe life into clay, stone, and fabric, keeping our civilization’s heritage alive,” she remarked.
Highlighting global cultural ties, she welcomed Tanzania as the partner nation for this year’s Mela. She expressed delight at the opportunity to experience Tanzanian dance, music, and cuisine, which bear traces of Indian influence due to centuries of historical ties. She also underscored that Tanzania’s participation reflects India’s deepening engagement with the African Union.
