Those who faced injustice for 70 years will get rights in Jammu and Kashmir: Amit Shah

New Delhi. The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2023 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill were discussed in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that this bill will provide rights to those who have faced injustice for 70 years. The Central Government has decided to reserve two seats for Kashmiri migrants through the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill. Along with this, one seat in this bill will be reserved for the people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Shah said that earlier, Jammu and Kashmir had 37 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. These seats have now increased to 43. There were 46 seats in the assembly from Kashmir, which has now increased to 47.

He said that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is our integral part; hence, 24 seats have been reserved for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. That is, before the new changes, there were 107 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly; now, after the new changes, these seats have increased to 114.

He said that earlier there were two nominated members; now their number will increase to five. Of these, two women will be nominated by the governor.

During the discussion on these bills in Rajya Sabha, Congress MP Digvijay Singh said that the government is not taking it as sensitively as Jammu and Kashmir is an issue. For the last four years, there is no assembly or government in Jammu and Kashmir; the governance is being run by the governor. He said that the government should immediately announce the date of elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
