Water supply in Vivekanand Camp in NDMC area.

New Delhi: There have been media reports about the water scarcity in Vivekanand camp in NDMC area and gathering of the crowds at Tankers for collecting water during distribution time.

The facts about water supply in the camp is as below:

Vivekanand camp is having approx. 775 Jhuggis and with population of approx. 3875 persons including women and children. The high topography of the area and unplanned dense nature of the cluster makes it difficult for piped water supply and therefore potable water is supplied through water tanker.

Everyday NDMC sends 3 water tankers of 9 KL capacity each to camp in the morning and 4 tankers of 9 KL capacity each in the evening at both access ends of the camp.

During summer season with increased demand for water the number of tankers has been increased to 4 water tankers of capacity 9 KL each in the morning and 5 water tankers of capacity 9 KL each in the evening.

In previous year the supply to the camp during the month of June 2020 was 3 water tankers of 9 KL capacity each to camp in the morning and 4 water Tankers of 9 KL capacity each in the evening.

With increased demand, NDMC has further augmented water Tanker supply to Vivekanand camp to 7 water tankers of 9 KL capacity each in the morning and 9 tankers of 9 KL capacity each in the evening.

This is almost double the volume of water supply in comparison to previous year. These supplies are to meet the need of drinking water and cooking water.

Water for toilets and bathing is separately arranged in adequate quantity at Community Toilet Units (CTUs) in the camp.

In addition, to augment the water supply to the camp NDMC is installing 2 large capacity water tanks of 10,000 liter capacity at both the access end thereby further increasing the in-situ storage capacity to 40,000 Liter. This shall be completed by 25th June, 2021.

Also, as a permanent solution, project for construction of underground water reservoir of 30,000 Liter along with laying of water pipeline to individual household is conceived for implementation at the earliest.

To ensure covid appropriate behaviour letters have been sent to Police and SDM in past to depute requisite police force and Executive Magistrate. In addition NDMC has deputed 12 Nos. of security staff to enforce covid appropriate behaviour.
