What is Article 67(A) of the Indian Constitution? Which Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar cited in his resignation

New Delhi, July 21  Jagdeep Dhankhar, the 14th Vice President of India, resigned from his post on Monday citing health reasons. His resignation comes at a time when he still has two years left in his term. Dhankhar, who took office in August 2022, on Monday sent his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu, in which he has mentioned Article 67(A). Let us know what is Article 67(A)?

Jagdeep Dhankhar in his resignation cited Article 67(A) of the Indian Constitution, which provides for the resignation of the Vice President. According to Article 67(A) of the Constitution, the Vice President can resign from his post by a letter written in his hand addressed to the President. This resignation will be considered immediately. The President has to tender his resignation on behalf of the Vice President.

The vice president can resign from his post anytime before his five-year term is over, all he has to do is submit a written resignation letter to the President. The process falls under Article 67 of the Constitution, which outlines the tenure of the vice president.

Experts say Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation will now kickstart the constitutional process of electing a new vice president of India. Experts say the vice president is also the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, so the post cannot remain vacant for long.

According to political observers, there is a strong possibility that Dhankhar’s successor will be elected soon, as mandated by the Constitution to ensure continuity in the functioning of the upper house of Parliament.

Dhankhar has been hospitalised several times in the past one year due to health issues, most recently in Nainital. The exact nature of his illness has not been disclosed.
