New Delhi, February 25 . The court may pronounce its verdict today against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court had convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar on February 12.
This case is related to the murder of two Sikh citizens Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in Delhi’s Saraswati Vihar area on November 1, 1984. During this time, Sikhs were massacred and their houses were set on fire.
Initially, an FIR was registered in Punjabi Bagh police station regarding this case. Later, the Special Investigation Team formed on the recommendation of Justice GP Mathur Committee investigated the case and filed a charge sheet.
The committee had recommended reopening of 114 cases. This case was one of them.
On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against accused Sajjan Kumar for offences punishable under Sections 147, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as Sections 302, 308, 323, 395, 397, 427, 436 and 440 along with Section 149 IPC.
The SIT alleged that Sajjan Kumar instigated the mob to attack, following which the mob burnt Sardar Jaswant Singh and Sardar Tarun Deep Singh alive and looted their household goods and other property. During this, their house was also burnt. Many people of the house were also injured in this attack.
Social worker Sonu Jandiala, who is helping this family, said in a conversation with IANS, “We have faith in the court. The Indian court should take such a decision that the world remembers. These people should be hanged. At that time, Sikhs were tortured a lot. Tires were set on fire and hung around their necks. It would be appropriate to call these people murderers, not leaders. Today, many people are no longer in this world. May their souls rest in peace, so it is important that these people be sentenced to death. The vessel of sins of these sinners is full. Earlier hope had died, but now hope has risen.” Let us tell you that on November 1, 2023, the court had recorded the statement of Sajjan Kumar. He had denied all the allegations against him. Thousands of people of the Sikh community were targeted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. –
