Mamta urges the Ministry of External Affairs to bring back Bengalis stranded in Afghanistan

Kolkata | Many people from the Darjeeling and Terai region of West Bengal are stranded in war-torn Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Mamta Banerjee has written a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday requesting to bring back the people. Mamta said on Wednesday that the state government has written a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs to bring back the people at the earliest.

“So far we have been able to trace more than 200 people who are stranded in different parts of Afghanistan,” Banerjee said during a press conference here. Some are stranded in Kabul and some are in other parts of the country. A letter is being written by the Chief Secretary of the state to the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure arrangements for bringing the stranded people to India and West Bengal and their safe return.

Most of them are from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Terai region, he said. We are trying to find out if there are more such people.

State Home Department sources, however, did not rule out the possibility of the presence of more people in troubled Afghanistan, which was taken over by the Taliban on Sunday.

A senior official of the state home department said, “We have been able to get this information in a very short time. We have asked the district administration to find out if there are more people in Afghanistan from the state.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Banerjee had asked the home department to find out how many Bengalis were stranded in Afghanistan and accordingly the department immediately informed all the districts.

“We have asked the district magistrates to directly inform the top administration officials if anyone comes and inform them that their relatives are stranded there, including their names, addresses, whereabouts in Afghanistan, phone numbers and other details,” the official said. be involved. After this, that information will be sent directly to Delhi.

“At present, New Delhi is working rapidly to bring all Indians from Afghanistan to their home countries safely,” he said. Therefore, if any person of the state is found trapped there, then his information will be given directly to Delhi. Also, the local administration has been asked to keep an eye on the needs of Afghans in Bengal.

Kolkata Police officials are also trying to find out whether any residents of the city or their relatives are trapped in Afghanistan.

Kolkata also has a large number of Kabuliwalas who came to the city for trade from Afghanistan.

A senior Kolkata Police officer said, “These people do not know what condition their families are in. We are also trying to contact them and try to establish contact with their families.
