Kiev | At least four explosions hit Kyiv on Thursday as Russia’s attack on Ukraine continued for the eighth day. The BBC reported that air raid sirens were heard in the capital city after the blasts. Two reportedly took place in the city center and two others near the metro station.
In the footage of the blasts on social media at around 3 am, a large ball of fire is visible in the night sky in the capital.
While the targets of the explosions remained unknown, there were no confirmed casualties or injuries.
Besides Kyiv, heavy shelling was also reported in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
Deputy Mayor Volodymyr Matsokin said the city center had suffered significant damage, the BBC reported.
Earlier, Matsokin wrote on his Facebook page that residents were killed when a ball hit their apartment building.
Also on Thursday morning, Igor Kolykhev, the mayor of Kherson, a major port city in southern Ukraine, claimed that Russian troops had seized control, the first to be captured by Moscow since launching its offensive on February 24. It has become a big city.
He further added that there was no Ukrainian army in the city, which is located on the banks of the Dnieper River and has a population of over 280,000.
Protests continued in the streets of St Petersburg, the hometown of Russian President Vladimir Putin, against the invasion of Moscow, leading to the arrest of hundreds of people.
According to the BBC, police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Russian opposition leader and Putin critic Alexei Navalny have called for daily protests against the Moscow attack, saying Russia should not be a “country of cowards”.
