Lt Governor Saxena, CM Atishi express grief over New Delhi railway station accident

New Delhi, Feb 16 A stampede broke out on platform number 14-15 of New Delhi railway station after rumours of cancellation of two trains to Prayagraj spread. Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Atishi have expressed their condolences to those injured in the incident.

Lt Governor VK Saxena wrote in a post on social media platform X, “An unfortunate and tragic incident has occurred at New Delhi railway station leading to loss of lives and property and injuries due to chaos and stampede. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have spoken to the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner and asked them to resolve the situation. The Chief Secretary has been asked to implement DDMA measures and deploy relief workers. All hospitals are ready to deal with related emergencies. I have directed the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner to remain at the site and control the relief measures. I am constantly monitoring the operation.”

Outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has criticized the Central and Uttar Pradesh governments for the lack of arrangements for the Maha Kumbh in a post on Instagram. She wrote, “Such an incident with the devotees going for the Maha Kumbh is very sad. Neither the Central Government nor the Uttar Pradesh Government is concerned about the safety of the people. There is no system in Prayagraj, nor are there any concrete traffic arrangements for the devotees coming from different states of the country.”

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that four special trains have been run to take the crowd to Prayagraj and now the situation is under control. He wrote in a post on Instagram, “The situation at New Delhi Railway Station is under control. Delhi Police and RPF have reached the spot. The injured have been taken to the hospital. Special trains are being run to clear the sudden crowd.”

In another post, he wrote, “Four special trains were run to control this unexpected crowd that suddenly came to New Delhi Railway Station. Now the crowd has reduced.”
