Laptop sales in second quarter in India, HP leads market

NEW DELHI: Millions of employees worked from home (work from home) during the nationwide bandh imposed due to the coronavirus epidemic, which led to the purchase of large number of laptops from various companies in India. Meanwhile, HP captured 32.8 percent market share in the June quarter, leading its total traditional PC market. A new IDC report said this on Tuesday. Lenovo, with 27.5 percent market share, finished second, surpassing Dell (17.8 percent share) in terms of sales.

IDC, which tracks personal computing devices globally on a quarterly basis, said that overall, India’s traditional PC market comprised desktops, laptops (notebooks) and workstations, which declined by 37.3 percent in the second quarter.

HP’s strong performance in the commercial segment was backed by some big wins and helped the company maintain its lead in the overall PC category.

In addition, it was the only company in the top five companies with a positive annual growth rate in the commercial segment, as its sales grew 11.8 percent in the second quarter of 2020.

Despite the supply and operations challenges in the first part of the quarter, companies executed most of the large orders in the second quarter of 2020, said Bharat Shenoy, market analyst at PC Devices, IDC India.

In addition, during this period, many companies assigned their employees to work on laptops, Shenoy said.

Among the product categories, desktop PCs were the most affected, with a decline of 46.4 percent.

According to Jaipal Singh, Associate Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India, the PC market is now expected to face challenges due to Kovid-19.
