The Election Commission banned Sarma, a minister in the Assam government and BJP leader for 48 hours, for allegedly making threatening comments against opposition leader Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader Hagrama Mohilary.
The Election Commission’s decision came in the wake of a complaint filed by Congress on March 30 alleging that Sarma had threatened to send Mohilary to jail by misusing the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
However, in a new order issued on Saturday, the Election Commission reduced the time period for prohibiting Sarma from campaigning in Assam assembly elections from 48 hours to 24 hours.
Criticizing the decision, Kumar said, “Within less than 24 hours, the Election Commission overturned its decision without notice or speaking to the complainant (Congress and Bodoland People’s Front).
