Amitabh was used to winning then, losing was a shock: Salim Khan

Mumbai, Sep 22  Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan of the Salim-Javed duo once spoke about the bad phase in Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan’s life.

An old footage shared by Waves shows Salim analysing the impact of failures on Big B’s life.

“I am not a psychiatrist, so I can’t tell what went wrong with Amitabh Bachchan. I am not very close to him right now, there was a time when I did 14-15 films with him. Sometimes it happens that a person gets so used to winning that when he loses, he gets a shock,” he said.

He further added, “Let me give you an example, if Sri Lanka wins a cricket match, it is a surprise that they won. If West Indies loses a match it is also a surprise. Amitabh Bachchan had become so used to winning that even a small failure would have a deep impact on him, and he would look at his failure in a very negative light.”

This video appears to be from the 80s or early 90s, when Big B was surrounded by troubles. In the 1980s, technological advancement in the field of entertainment in the form of VCRs made its way to India, causing a crisis in the Hindi film industry, this wave also affected Big B’s stardom.

Then in the mid-1980s, Big B got embroiled in the Bofors scandal, which involved the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and several other members of the Indian and Swedish government. However, Big B, on his part, said that his name was “implicated” in the scandal.

Later when Big B came out of the shadow of the Bofors ‘scandal’, he got into a huge debt when his production house Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd incurred huge losses. The production house went into debt after the failure of the 1996 edition of the Miss World beauty pageant. That was the worst phase of Big B’s life as he had a debt of over Rs 100 crore to lend to creditors. He then managed to get rid of these troubles years later with the earnings from the quiz-based reality show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan is currently seen in the OTT documentary ‘Angry Young Men’.
