Chennai, September Led by Jasprit Bumrah (4 wickets for 50 runs), India bowled out Bangladesh for 149 runs in the first innings after tea on Friday, the second day of the first Test, thanks to a strong performance by the bowlers. India got a huge lead of 227 runs in the first innings but decided to play in the second innings without enforcing follow-on and scored 81 runs for the loss of three wickets till stumps on the second day. India now has a total lead of 308 runs.
In India’s second innings, captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for five, Yashasvi Jaiswal for 10 and Virat Kohli for 17 runs. At stumps, Shubman Gill was at the crease with 33 runs and Rishabh Pant with 12 runs. India got a big lead of 227 runs in the first innings, which has now increased its total lead to 308 runs.
Earlier, apart from Bumrah’s four wickets in Bangladesh’s first innings, Mohammad Siraj, Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each. Bumrah became the sixth Indian fast bowler to take 400 international wickets during this period. For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan scored 32, Mehdi Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 27, Liton Kumar Das scored 22 and captain Nazmul Hussain Shanto scored 20 runs.
India had pushed Bangladesh on the backfoot by taking three wickets in the first session. Bangladesh lost five more batsmen in the second session.
After lunch, Siraj kept the ball in line and it took the outside edge of Nazmul Hussain Shanto’s bat and went straight to third slip. In the next over, Bumrah moved the ball late and it took a good edge of Mushfiqur Rahim’s bat and went to second slip. Despite consistent line and length from the bowlers, Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan tried to hold on to the situation.
The duo hit superb drives off Bumrah, Siraj and Akash Deep before Shakib hit more boundaries off loose deliveries from Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
The 51-run stand for the sixth wicket ended when Das tried to sweep a delivery from Jadeja outside off-stump but the ball went to substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel at deep backward square leg. Das made 22.
In Jadeja’s next over, Shakib tried to reverse-sweep but the ball hit his shoe and Rishabh Pant stepped forward to take an easy catch. Hasan Mahmud and Mehdi Hasan Miraz hit three boundaries each. Bumrah had Hasan Mahmud caught at second slip at tea.
India took two more wickets after tea and wrapped up the visitors’ innings at 149 runs. Bumrah bowled Taskin Ahmed and Siraj bowled Nahid Rana. Taskin and Nahid Rana both scored 11-11 runs.
In the morning session, the Indian team was able to add 37 runs to their yesterday’s score. Taskin Ahmed gave the first three blows to India while Hasan Mahmud took the last wicket in the form of Jasprit Bumrah and bowled out the Indian innings. Mahmud bowed down as soon as he opened his hands. He has also become the first bowler from Bangladesh to take a five-wicket haul in India. Yesterday, Mahmud also took the first four wickets of India. Mahmud got five wickets for 83 runs and Taskin Ahmed got three wickets for 55 runs.
India’s experienced off-spin all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin played the role of top scorer in the Indian innings.
Bangladesh started the second day with a second new ball, with Ashwin remaining unbeaten on 102 to take India to 339/6.
Taskin Ahmed dismissed Ravindra Jadeja in his second over of the day, breaking a 199-run partnership with Taskin edging the ball straight to the keeper. The left-handed batsman missed out on a hundred by 14 runs.
Akash Deep (17) was caught at mid-off off Taskin after hitting four boundaries. Taskin picked up his third wicket of the day when Ashwin mistimed his drive and was caught at mid-off, leaving him on 113 off 133 balls. The Chepauk crowd gave him a standing ovation.
Mahmud ended India’s first innings with Jasprit Bumrah caught at third slip in less than an hour on day two. The pacer also became the first Bangladesh bowler to take five-wicket hauls in Tests in India.
